Edit: Oops just saw your last post made while I was typing this. Try clearing CMOS again? Reseat memory sticks too.

Enter BIOS setup and reset all to Defaults settings,Save & Exit.

The hdd and CD/DVd drive are both being recognized in BIOS now?

Will the Windows 7 upgrade disc boot? That is assuming this is a retail disc.

Check the SATA port settings, are all enabled?

As for IDE vs SATA setting, your hdd and CD/DVD are both plugged into SATA ports I believe so SATA setting would be correct.(I didn't see any IDE ports in diagram of board).

Have you tried tapping the ESC key at power on to see if it will offer manual selection of the CD/DVD drive as boot device?

Last..have you tried plugging the old hdd into same SATA port as new hdd to see if it will boot? Or even the original port in case it is working after clearing CMOS? No need to remove new hdd  or even install old hdd for testing-if you can manage to unplug cables and plug into hdd.I have done this with the hdd standing on end.Just be sure the backside of it isn't touching any metal of case.

okay ,i will try a few more of those things. the windows 7 i have is and upgrade cd i got free from hp if im not mistaken.

i dont think the cable will stretch far enough to test old drive, where would it go if i had both old and new installed.im assuming the pocket bay above the usb area.

sorry for so many questions.

Edited:

took case off pc. took out the cmos battery. while that was out  i reset all the memory chips, checked all the plugins, then got brave and installed the old hard drive in the bay above the other drive that said hdd on it. put cmos battery back in.and closeed up case. turned on pc and it showed the old hard drive on a start up screen but not the new, then said something about bios being reset to default and something else i cant remember. then it went to the same screen about putting proper boot disc and resart,so i put in  the vista recovery one i had made, and reboot. nothing.and back to the blue screen with options of escape to boot options,setup,ect.. so i went back into bios and no drives at all listed. diagnostics thing said bioshd2 again. im past having any more ideas with this. Thanks for helping me this far,but looks like only a trip to the shop is my option.
