z420 on startup fans rev up loudly and won't boot
09-26-2013 09:18 PM

I have a new z420...when the power button is pushed the light comes on and nothing happens but the following: the fans go into turbo mode very loudly....and stay there....no video output, no power to peripheral usb devices....no boot up. Just loud fans. No way to shut down during this except to power off holding in button. Please advise!

Hi hansonthree!
Sorry to hear you are having trouble starting your Z420 Workstation.
I have researched your issue. I have included a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide for your workstation. Your situation is mentioned on page 127 under the “Troubleshooting scenarios and solutions” section. It has a detailed set of steps to take to assist in resolving the issue.

Hi Happythohelp01,
I have the same problem as hansonthree, so I tried to follow the link you proposed, but it comes out blank. I went directly to the Maintenance and Service Guide of the z420 workstation but on page 127 there are only audio problems. I checked the other section of the “Troubleshooting scenarios and solutions” section but I haven't found this specific problem. Could you please point me to the steps to resolve the problem, please?
Thank you.

Thanks for the quick reply. I took out one stick, booted, still the same, did the same with the other stick, still the same, tried differenet slots, held mouth open certain way, stood on one leg, still the same. No video output, no mouse or keyboard lights. Lights are on start button. Wondering if power supply is outputing voltage to motherboard, how would I find the specs for pin voltages??
Thanks

I had memory stick go bad after less than 2 weeks.
Not sure if Z420 will run with only one slot ...you need to check. If you can get your hand on different memory sticks and try them (as long as they are matchy match with Z420) that would be best.
I also thought I had a power supply problem but turned out i was barking up wrong tree. It was memory stick that tested out good ...but was actually bad.
Its expensive but if you can try new memory sticks that worked for me
