OMEN by HP Accelerator Shell - GA1-1000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

First thing first, I am new to the eGPU world and my previous experience with graphics card was from my previous laptop which was a "gaming" laptop (if such a thing exist, let's just say it had a discrete GPU and was massive AF), so feel free to share your knowledge.

So I recently got an HP Omen accelerator to run games with my new work notebook (full setup below).  I got it up and running (the quick setup manual is at best confusing, please update it) and  made sure that everything (thunderbolt 3, BIOS, OMEN firmware, AMD driver) is up to date, but i still get the same issue:

I can benchmark with unigine at ultra with stability.

I can play low demanding games (mount and blade warband) with stability (meaning a few hours without any issue).

But when i launch a demanding game (not necessarily at max settings) like Kingdom Come: Deliverance or the Division 2, the Omen crashes: meaning that my plugged-in monitor turns black, my laptop does not respond (screen stays black: I am only using the monitor) and a constant buzzing is emmited from my headphones (connected to my laptop).

When that happens the bright red light of the Omen turns automatically off, and the only thing I can do is restart my laptop by pressing the power button a few seconds. After that, the whole thing works as if nothing had happened, until I relaunch a game, then it crashes again. It happened 100% of the time and it is usually within 5 minutes of the game launch.

I monitored the GPU Temp and Power just before the crash (using HWMonitor) and I have temps in the low 70 celsius and Max power at around 150-170W. The GPU usage is 99-100%, but it is still 99-100% at max settings but the whole thing crashes sonner. (The CPU usage is not at max so I guess it is not the bottleneck)

As anyone had a similar "experience" with this eGPU enclosure?

To be honest, at the moment, I would recommend anyone asking me to stay away from that product...

Another issue: the eGPU never shuts down even when everything is unplugged! To work around that design flaw, i use a powerbar with a switch. Seriously HP, who the hell wants a constant PSU fan spinning with a red light for a device that is purposefully bought for part-time use? Next time add an on/off switch, or ask me for practical design advice ;).

My setup is:

Lenovo Ideapad 730s

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz
  • 16GB LPPDR3 2133MHz
  • 256 GB M.2 SSD

HP Omen accelerator

  • RX 580 Sapphire Pulse
  • 500GB 2.5" crucial SSD

The eGPU enclosure is connected using the thuderbolt 3 cable coming with the Omen (the cable is way too short to be practical, if HP wants my opinion). Plus, man is that enclosure bulky and has an awkward shape!

Thanks, for your help.
