Microsoft Windows 11

I  like to use the omen accelerator for gaming using a new asus laptop.  I like to (A) Omen GPU output to external 4k monitor and have the ability for (B) OMEN to enhance the graphics capability of the laptop to drive the laptop screen/s .

1. What do I need to do in terms to connect omen egpu with the laptop. for A

2. Then for B

I used to have the Hp Spectre within the Omen even then it is not as stable regarding the  HP device drivers to connect the two together.  Are better apps that can improve this or is just needed a thunderbolt port?  If latter please advice on Thunderbolt standards requirement.

@TAO8, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Using the HP Omen Accelerator with a new ASUS laptop (non-HP system) to achieve:

(A) External 4K monitor driven by the GPU inside the Omen Accelerator

(B) Use the Omen's GPU to accelerate your laptop's internal display

is possible, but there are some key technical and practical factors to consider. Let’s break it down.

Prerequisites for Both A & B

Thunderbolt 3 or 4 Port

The Omen Accelerator uses Thunderbolt 3 for connection. You’ll need:

  • A laptop with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port (NOT just USB-C).
  • Confirm eGPU support in BIOS/firmware. Not all Thunderbolt ports support external GPUs.
  • Intel CPUs work better with eGPUs; AMD-based laptops may have inconsistent support.

Supported Graphics Card Installed

Inside the Omen Accelerator, you must install a compatible desktop GPU (NVIDIA or AMD).

Ensure the card is:

  • Properly seated and powered.
  • Within PSU limits of the Omen Accelerator.

(A) Output to External 4K Monitor (Preferred & Stable)

This is the most reliable and performance-friendly use of an eGPU.

Steps:

  1. Connect the Omen Accelerator to your laptop using a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable.
  2. Connect the external 4K monitor to the GPU outputs on the Omen Accelerator, not your laptop.
  3. Install:
The latest GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD) for the desktop card inside the Omen.
Thunderbolt drivers/software for your ASUS laptop (Intel's Thunderbolt Control Center or equivalent).
  4. Once connected:
The external monitor should show up as a display under Windows.
You can set it as primary display and run games or apps on it.

Why A works better: Data and video travel only through Thunderbolt once (to the eGPU), then straight to the external monitor, no return trip.

(B) Use eGPU to Accelerate Laptop's Internal Display (Possible but Less Efficient)

This setup causes performance bottlenecks because:

Thunderbolt must send data to the eGPU and the rendered frames back to the internal screen — over the same limited bandwidth.

Steps:

Same setup as (A) except:

  • Do not connect an external monitor.
  • Launch games on your laptop screen.

You’ll still need:

Latest eGPU drivers.

  • Possibly configure Windows Graphics Settings:
  • Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings

Force specific apps to use the high-performance GPU (the eGPU).

Performance may be:

  • 15–30% lower than when using an external display.
  • Subject to latency and thermal throttling (especially if your ASUS laptop already has a discrete GPU).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
