HP Portable SSD P500

Hi! So I am using Mac OS 12.4, and I recently bought a SSD P500, and I only have about 150 gb of storage on it, however it keeps giving me the notification that it has been ejected improperly (and then it disappears off the mac) even when It is still fully plugged in. I have tried using diffrent cables, using diffrent USB-c ports on my mac, and diffrent adapters, so that leads me to believe it is not the connection, and it is possibly a problem of the SSD itself. I have also done the "first aid" function that the mac has in order to possibly repair drives from minor issues, however that dosent seem to have helped. When I try to look up the S/N or the P/N on the HP repair website, it says that it is an incorrect number even though Ive triple checked the number on both the packaging and the device, thus it wont let me check any warranty information. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank you!

Hi @Nox7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Portable SSD P500 keeps saying it was disconnected, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check the physical connection:

  • Ensure that the USB cable connecting the SSD to your computer is securely plugged in on both ends. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause intermittent disconnections.

Use a different USB port:

  • Try connecting the SSD to a different USB port on your computer. The port you're using might be faulty, or it could be experiencing a power issue.

Try a different USB cable:

  • The USB cable itself may be damaged or malfunctioning. Try using a different USB cable to see if that resolves the issue.

Test on another computer:

  • Connect the HP Portable SSD P500 to another computer to see if it works without any disconnection issues. If it works on another computer, the problem may be with your original computer's USB ports or drivers.

Check for driver updates:

  • Make sure you have the latest drivers for your HP Portable SSD P500 installed on your computer. Visit the HP website or the SSD manufacturer's website to download and install any available driver updates.

USB power management settings:

  • Check your computer's USB power management settings. Some operating systems have power-saving features that can cause USB devices to disconnect to save power. Disable these settings if necessary.

Scan for malware or viruses:

  • Malware or viruses on your computer can sometimes interfere with USB devices. Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to ensure your system is clean.

Update your operating system:

  • Ensure that your operating system is up to date with the latest updates and patches. Sometimes, operating system updates can resolve compatibility issues.

Test with a different computer:

  • If the SSD continues to disconnect on multiple computers, it may be a sign of a hardware issue with the SSD itself.

Data backup:

  • If you suspect a hardware issue, it's essential to ensure your data is backed up from the SSD before pursuing further troubleshooting

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have the same problem on MAC and Windows PC.

I tried different cables too and the drive turns off and disconnects.
