HP Reverb
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi. I am sure this will have been covered before but I couldn't find a specific post.

I have a gaming PC (i7 7700 with new RTX2070S GPU) which has been used for VR gaming (Rift) perfectly. After reading a lot of very good reviews I have just bought the Reverb and set it up for the first time with the WMR software.

I got it all working properly for my seated gaming position and working with Steam and the game I play most. All seemed to be well and I was very pleased and impressed with the extra clarity over the Rift as that was my key reason for buying it. However, on powering down and restarting the system I got a Windows warning about a power surge on a USB port and the machine would shut down to protect itself. I tried it again and same thing, and again, so I stopped (the Reverb is plugged into the SS high speed USB so there shouldn't be a problem there). Tried the Rift again and all back to normal. Then onto Google to see if this was isolated and of course it wasn't but I didn't see a definitive solution. Hence the post. Is there a way of sorting this out that is safe for the overall operation of the machine?

Any suggestions graetfully received as this is such a disappointment - all I had read about the Reverb was glowing prior to buying it with respect to the step up in visual clarity so I don't want to just abandon it.

Thanks!

Nick

@Fluid404 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are getting USB power surge error.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Try a hard reset -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Unplug all the Adapter and peripherals connected.
3) Press and hold down the power button for 15 to 20 seconds.
4) Plug-in the Adapter.
5) Try to turn on the computer.

Install updates using HP Support Assistant

  1. In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. Check for updates.
  3. If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Note: If you do not have HP Support Assistant installed, Click here to download the same.

Hi Praveen, thanks for the reply.

Could you let me know, what do you mean by adapter? Does that mean the power cable? If you can let me know I will try it.

In addition to the power surge issue (which seemed to have gone away for a couple of days and the headset was working fine on a few consecutive occasions) I have now, tonight, had another power surge warning and then issues with the headset just going blank as though a cable has been removed. I use it for seating SIM racing and so am not moving around. This is getting really frustrating. After 2 years of perfect operation from a Rift this is not great. The Reverb is much better for clarity but these other issues are killing it.

Thanks, Nick

A power adapter(Brick type) is connecting the device to the laptop.

Please touch the power adapter and let us know is it warm or cold while the power cord is connected to wall outlet.

Please perform the system test and let us know the result.

Please perform the below steps on the computer to run a System Test

- Shut down/Turn off the computer

- Once the computer is completely Shut down/Turned off

- Now press the power button once to turn on the computer and immediately start pressing/tapping the F2 key on the keyboard

- This should open the UEFI Diagnostic screen on the computer

- Please select System Test and then select Quick Test

Have a nice day!!

Hi, Thanks Praveen.

Couple of things:

- I am using a gaming PC (desktop) not laptop - not sure if that makes a difference.

- The Reverb VR headset doesn't have an adaptor it connects directly to the USB and display port sockets.

@Fluid404

Please perform the USB test and let us know the result.

1. Power off the PC and make sure that it is completely powered off.

2. Press the power button and the moment you press the power button immediately start tapping F2 key, you should see the system diagnostics screen.

3. Look for the component test, under that all the hardware will be listed, please choose USB and initiate the quick test.

Note: If it fails it will generate a 24 digits alphanumeric failure id, please capture that.

Hi Praveen,

Over the weekend I managed to test another Reverb headset on my PC and things have worked fine so I think the problem is with the first headset that I will be returning. Thanks for your suggestions and I'll come back if I get any further problems. Thanks again, Nick
