Hi HP Community,

I’ve been using a wireless keyboard (recent model, compatible with multiple devices) and I’ve noticed a strange issue. Some of the keys don’t respond consistently  sometimes they work fine, but other times they don’t register at all. It happens randomly and has become quite frustrating in my daily use.

Here’s what I’ve already tried:

  • Replaced the batteries
  • Re-paired the keyboard with the device
  • Tested it on different computers
  • Checked for any physical damage

Even after all that, the issue still happens, especially when I need to press multiple keys at once. To double-check, I ran a test using an online keyboard testing tool and could see that certain keys fail during the test with no clear pattern.

Has anyone else experienced this with wireless keyboards? Could this be a hardware defect, or is there maybe an update or setting that could solve it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi @Otávio_Gomes,

I understand your wireless keyboard is working inconsistently, some keys respond sometimes but fail at other times, even after changing batteries, re-pairing, and testing on different computers. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check for Wireless Interference

Wireless keyboards can be affected by nearby devices (Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones).

Try using the keyboard closer to the USB receiver and away from other wireless devices.

Test USB Receiver Port

Plug the receiver into a different USB port, preferably directly on the computer instead of through a hub or extension.

If your PC has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, try both.

Update Keyboard Drivers

On Windows: Open Device Manager → Keyboards → Update Driver.

If the keyboard is Bluetooth-based, also update Bluetooth drivers from HP Support.

Check for Firmware Updates

Some HP wireless keyboards come with firmware updates through HP Support Assistant.

Open HP Support Assistant → Updates → check if an update is available for your keyboard.

Reset the Keyboard Connection

Remove the wireless dongle or unpair the device.

Turn off the keyboard, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on and re-pair.

This forces a fresh handshake with the receiver.

Test with Different Surface/Environment

If the keyboard is optical-mechanical, some surfaces (like metal desks) may affect wireless reception.

Try testing in another room or on another desk.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (if supported)

On Windows, restart and press F2 repeatedly → choose Component Tests → Keyboard Test.

This can confirm if it’s a hardware-level failure.

I hope this helps.

I’m having a very similar issue with my wireless keyboard. Did you notice if the problem happens more often while gaming or just during normal typing? I’m not sure if it’s my connection or the keyboard itself.
