Issue: HP GK400F Gaming Keyboard

Purchase Date: 25 June 2025

Problems:

  • The RGB backlighting is not working on the following keys:

    • Left Arrow

    • Right Alt

    • Right Fn

  • Several keys are registering unintended additional keystrokes:

    • Pressing P also types [.

    • Pressing L also types ;.

    • Pressing 0 also types -.

    • Pressing . (period) also types /.

  • The issue occurs consistently during typing and gaming, making the keyboard difficult to use.

  • The keyboard has not been subjected to any physical damage or liquid spills, and the issue persists during normal use.

I request that the keyboard be inspected and repaired or replaced under the applicable warranty.

I understand that my HP GK400F keyboard is now out of warranty. However, the issue started shortly after the warranty expired, and the keyboard has been used under normal conditions without any physical damage or liquid spills.

The RGB backlighting is not working on the Left Arrow, Right Alt, and Right Fn keys. Additionally, pressing P also types [, pressing L also types ;, pressing 0 also types -, and pressing . also types /. These faults make the keyboard difficult to use for both typing and gaming.

As the keyboard has developed what appears to be a hardware defect soon after the warranty period ended, I kindly request that HP consider a goodwill repair or replacement. I have been satisfied with HP products and would appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Hi  @Dhruvsoni,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  this situation must be, especially when your HP GK400F Gaming Keyboard is experiencing multiple issues that affect both typing and gaming. I also appreciate the detailed information you've provided regarding the RGB lighting failure and the unintended keystrokes. I can certainly understand your concern, particularly since the issue appeared shortly after the warranty period ended, Dont worry let me try to help you with this.

Could you kindly confirm the below details  :

  1. Is the keyboard connected directly to the PC or through a USB hub/docking station?
  2. Have you tested the keyboard on another computer? If yes, does the issue persist there as well?
  3. Do the unintended keystrokes occur immediately after startup, including in BIOS, or only within Windows?
  4. Does the RGB issue affect all lighting modes, or only specific effects/colors?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

1. Test on Another System

Connect the keyboard to a different computer and verify:

  • Whether the affected RGB keys remain unlit.
  • Whether pressing P, L, 0, and . still produces additional characters.

This helps determine whether the issue is hardware-related or software-related.

2.Run the HP UEFI Keyboard Test : (For your reference kindly find the link to perform the UEFI test - Click here )

To help determine whether the issue is related to hardware or software, please perform the HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics Keyboard Test:

  1. Disconnect the keyboard and reconnect it directly to the computer.
  2. Restart the PC and repeatedly press Esc during startup.
  3. From the Startup Menu, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
  4. Navigate to Component Tests - Input Devices - Keyboard Test.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and test the affected keys, including P, L, 0, ., Left Arrow, Right Alt, and Right Fn.
  6. Note any failures or keys that do not respond correctly and share the results with us.

If the keyboard test reports failures or the unintended keystrokes occur even within the UEFI environment, this would strongly indicate a hardware-related issue

I hope this helps.

Hi @Dhruvsoni,

Thanks for your response and Thank you for completing the troubleshooting steps.

Since the issue occurs on multiple computers, affects the same keys, and persists regardless of the operating system or connection type, this suggests a hardware-related issue with the keyboard. The RGB lighting malfunction further supports this conclusion.

We recommend contacting or visiting an HP Authorized Service Center for a hardware evaluation.

Those symptoms sound more like a hardware or keyboard matrix issue than a simple RGB problem. The fact that specific keys are consistently triggering adjacent characters makes me suspect the switch matrix or controller. I’d test the keyboard on another PC first to rule out a Windows or driver issue. If the same combinations happen there, that would make a hardware fault much more likely. Hopefully HP can offer a goodwill replacement since the problem appeared so soon after the warranty ended.
