Hi @prk97,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with the mouse.

If your HP Wireless Mouse 250 is making a rectangular shape on the screen after changing the battery, it could be due to an unintended activation of a specific mouse feature or a software glitch. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check for Stuck or Unintentionally Pressed Buttons

  • Inspect the Mouse: Ensure that no buttons are stuck or being unintentionally pressed, especially any side buttons or a DPI switch that might change the mouse's behavior.
  • Reset the Mouse: Turn the mouse off, remove the battery, wait a few seconds, then reinsert the battery and turn the mouse back on.

2. Check the Mouse Settings

  • Mouse Settings in Windows:
    1. Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse.
    2. Check if there are any special features like "snap to" or "pointer trails" that might cause the issue.
    3. If you have installed specific software for the mouse (like HP Mouse Control), check for any custom settings or gestures that might be causing the rectangle to appear.

3. Update or Reinstall Mouse Driver

Update Driver:

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click on your HP mouse and select Update driver.
  4. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Reinstall Driver:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click on your HP mouse and select Uninstall device.
  2. Confirm the uninstallation and then restart your computer.
  3. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver upon reboot.

4. Disable Any Overlay or Screen Annotation Tools

  • Screen Annotation Tools: Check if any screen annotation or screenshot tools are running in the background that might be causing the rectangular shape to appear when you move the mouse.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @prk97,

Please find the remaining steps below.

5. Test on Another Device

  • Test the Mouse: Connect the mouse to another computer or device to see if the issue persists. If the rectangle still appears, it may indicate a problem with the mouse itself.

6. Perform a System Restore (Optional)

  • If the problem started immediately after changing the battery and persists despite the above steps, you might consider performing a system restore to revert your system to a previous state before the issue began.

Summary

  • Check for stuck buttons or unintended key presses.
  • Inspect and adjust mouse settings in Windows.
  • Update or reinstall the mouse driver to fix potential software issues.
  • Disable any screen annotation tools that might cause a rectangular shape to appear.
  • Test the mouse on another device to rule out hardware issues.

If the problem persists after trying these steps, it could be a hardware-related issue with the mouse itself, and you may need to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance or consider replacing the mouse.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
