Hmm ok. Perhaps the specifications and the marketing database are incorrect. Perhaps I had jumped to conclusions too quickly.

However, to reiterate my previous question, what do you exactly see in the About section when right-clicking the Thunderbolt 3 icon on the bottom right?

For example, my system shows this:

I'm going to be honest but I don't think there's any sort of Thunderbolt 3 support on your device unless there's some Thunderbolt controller driver that I'm missing here.

Unless there's some sort of error in the specifications documents, I have no clue how the other guy setup the external GPU.

If you check under System Devices in Device Manager, you should see a Thunderbolt(TM) Controller.

As a last resort, you could try installing this and see if anything changes, otherwise I'm afraid I'm certain there's no Thunderbolt 3 support:

Thank you Eddy.

One thing I'm unsure about, do I need a thunderbolt 3 device attached to prove if tb3 is installed? A lot of things I have read about, including the Intel drivers, require that the device is attached while installing the drivers.

We have a  lot of evidence that says my laptop does not support thunderbolt 3 but I also have a thunderbolt logo and evidence that someone else on this forum has the same laptop with thunderbolt 3 running.

This review is promising...

I believe there have been upgrades over the years too and my laptop, which I bought used from eBay, is apparently 2 years old now, which is why I wonder if the official HP spec is out of date.

BTW, thanks for the kudos. I am new to this site so how do I give it back?

You don't need a Thunderbolt 3 device for the Thunderbolt controller to show up.

I just tested this on my Spectre x360 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. The controller shows up and reports 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports.

I also successfully installed the Thunderbolt controller driver on my other laptop which doesn't even have any USB-C ports and it shows the exact same About page as yours.

I'm going to ask some people for advice and I'll get back to you.

Hello again. I finally bit the bullet and bought an Omen Accelerator and it works fine with my 17-an012dx laptop. I found that by plugging the TB3 cable into the laptop the device manager reported a new device but did not recognize it. I clicked on update drivers and the TB3 drivers were installed.

I then had to go through a process of installing other drivers and software. I currently have an old Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card installed which seems to work fine with the discreet AMD RX 580.

I will be replacing it with an RTX 2060.

My only problem is that the Omen Accelerator app cannot see my HP Support Assistant and keeps asking me to install it. Weird.

Thought I'd let you know for future reference and thanks again for your time on this.

Thanks for the update and really nice to hear that you got it up and running.

Kind regards,

Eddy
