I tried that, it didn't make any difference for me.
Worth a try though, for anyone still getting the crash.
As did I, though that does solve many other issues with the controllers. I was finally able to get mine working as well. Thank you @VanBurenPhilips for your config file, it was quite helpful. While I did not have multiple entries in the external_drivers, I did notice that it was not pointed at my primary Steam folder, but rather one of the other library locations. I also noticed that WMR for SteamVR was NOT in the beta branch for some reason. I used Revo to do a deep uninstall of SteamVR and scoured all of my libraries to ensure there were no SteamVR instances hiding somewhere. I then re-installed SteamVR specifically to the C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam core library (at least it is core on my machine), and immediately directed it to the Beta branch. Once the Beta was installed, and both SteamVR and WMRforSVR confirmed on the beta branch with [beta] next to their names, I launched into SteamVR, successfully! It seems my issue was basically the same issue, just manifesting in a different way. Either way that reminds me to suggest to others that they are in the Beta branch. I have also been seeing a lot of HP Reverb love in the SteamVR patch notes, so I am hopeful that things will start to stabilize. I was finally able to give Alyx a go on the Reverb G2, and in the new higher resolution it is just jaw dropping, and EXTREMELY smooth to my surprise, despite the much higher res.
One other observation from that file; @VanBurenPhilips I am assuming that those H and G drive Steam folders are other Libraries, is that all of them and are they active? I noticed that in mine my extra library folders were not defined in that variable, and I wonder what it might be used for (wonder if it controls any of the sniffing out SVR titles for pinup in WMR).
Regardless, glad to be up and running finally, what a nuisance that was!

I'm having the same issue. SteamVR crashes on reconnection of a controller almost every time. None of the suggestions so far have worked to fix this. Isn't there a way to just stop the controller from sleeping?

I have the very same question...I have had the controllers replaced( took three months). I have today received a new HMD along with a new cable. was sure this would sort my issues but unfortunately not to be! I'm at a loss as to what is going on. If I use my old Samsung odyssey controllers it works fine with the G2. i'm at a total lose as to how this gets fixed.
Happy to share anything needed to get this up and running.
Windows10 Pro
intel i9 9900K
32GB ram
RTX 2080Ti
Z390 msi motherboard
The HMD is killing it graphically.

I recommend you work with Steam directly. They were excellent at giving detailed analysis and feedback. I went through all troubleshooting steps with them and ended up having to reinstall windows unfortunately in the end to resolve the issue. Steam support said that they did indeed suspect from what I submitted there was a corruption within windows fyi. That did resolve my issue.
