Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I recently bought a RTX 2060 but my processor is bottle necking it. I currently have a i5-7400 and I’m looking to upgrade it. What would be the most powerful cpu upgrade i could get or some good ones?

Hi:

According to the processor upgrade specs for your PC's motherboard, the best processor you can install would be the Intel Core i7-7700.

HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Odense2-K | HP® Customer Support

That may help a little, but it is probably not going to make a world of difference.

@Nebulous,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

Making sure you have all of the processor options known to you, your motherboard (Odense2-K, SSID: 82F1) is also compatible with the high-performance i7-7700K.

Here is one of many references: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/53089719.

If you are going to recommend a non-standard processor outside of what HP lists as supported, you should also indicate the cooling issues it may run into with the stock heatsink.

@Paul_Tikkanen,

All righty then: "non-standard"? -Funny you would say that, because according to HP's very own Odense2-K motherboard specifications, processors with a, and I quote: "TDP: Up to 91 W" are approved.

The i7-7700K happens to have a 91 watt TDP, so it would fall within HP's TDP criteria for this motherboard.

Having said that, you are correct that it would be a good idea to upgrade your desktop's cooling fans, specifically the CPU cooling fan if you are fitting an i7-7700K -but it would be worth-it from my own experience with said processor.

If @Nebulous is interested in an i7-7700K, all the OP has to do is ask what cooling upgrades/options are available.

Then why didn't HP specifically list the i7-7700K as supported along with the other 3?

@Paul_Tikkanen,

As you are very well aware of, the: "why does HP what it does" is a recurring question in this Forum that keeps on giving.

Why, for example, did HP qualify only three (3) compatible processors for the HP Z240 SFF?

When in all actuality, this desktop can be fitted including ALL of the following processors:

NonSequitur777_1-1661358735469.pngNonSequitur777_2-1661358775883.png

And this listing is incomplete, as it omits most of the Xeon E3-12xx v6 processors, which are compatible with the HP Z240 SFF.

PLUS, incidentally, our very same i7-7700K and the high-end Xeon E3-1280 v6 which I have currently fitted in my HP Z240 SFF: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/54265503.

[EDIT:] My friend, far be it from me to lollygag a rather insignificant squabble in the grand order of things, but perhaps we are asking the wrong question.  Rather, we should ask the question: "Why would HP specify TDP: Up to 91 W", when the highest TDP of the "supported" processors is only 65 watt?

Therefore, I cannot intelligibly answer the "why" HP does the things they do.

If anyone finds out, you have my full attention.
