This is what I did: I started using Linux (Manjaro Gnome) instead of Windows since Microsoft destroyed the little trust I had left in them. And then I installed Windows10 on a separate SSD. Today I boot into Linux on my main SSD for everyday use and for general gaming, and whenever I want to play VR, I boot into the Windows 10 SSD while waiting for the open source community to step in (and possibly Valve) to fix what HP decided not to do.
Support is slowly growing in the open source community. The HP Reverb G2 has 6dof support in Linux, but no controller support (I guess since it's a proprietary headset bluetooth connection?). Anyway, getting it to work requires "power user"-level of effort in Linux. But yeah, officially the HP Reverb G2 has become an expensive door stop and HPs silence allow me to never purchase anything from them again.
