Launch the game in question in flat mode if possible and lower the graphics settings to low or medium. Try playing the game in VR afterwards and if you don't get a black screen you know the issue is directly related to your games graphics settings.
You can also lower the per eye resolution in SteamVR via the hamburger menu. The default is set to 100% but most of us have to lower that between 50% to 66 % to get VR games to work properly without issues. I have it set to 66% on an NVIDIA RTX 2070 card on an I7 9700 CPU 3GHz Intel system.

Try a different power outlet, extension cord if you are using one or power strip.
Look through my previous post ..
Including the last part about cable management.

i have a similar problem when playing Beat Sabre.
oddly enough, i can temporary fix it by lowering my sound volume at 100% volume it cut out often in bass heavy songs. but just lowering to like 80% it stopped.
i Believe that there is some problem with their cables, either too long or not shielded enough so not enough signal integrity. is there any way to monitor the communication?

Similar problem with a Reverb G1. I used it for about eight months without any problems. Then one day the screen started blacking out a few seconds at a time. Always the same pattern:
1. Both eyes shut off for about one second
2. Right eye comes back on for a few seconds
3. Both eyes shut off again for about one second
4. Both eyes come back on.
I've tried updating drivers, rolling back drivers, changing USB ports, using a powered USB hub, installing a PCIe USB card, changing video ports, you name it. I've also tried the reduce/cut off audio volume thing. Nothing seems to work. Very frustrating and makes me leery of the G2.

The symptoms you describe are usually associated with in game options. I've been told by developers that it's caused by the VR comfort option in some games. I have a similar issue with one VR game and after speaking with the developer I was told it was caused by the comfort option and advised to turn it off within the game settings.
I have no idea if this applies to all VR games but I think it's an isolated issue with specific games. See if you have such an option and turn it off to see if it resolves your issue.

Thanks but that is not applicable to my situation. Maybe it will help someone else.
It doesn't just happen in a game. It happens all the time in any environment. I've used VR for several years and used the G1 headset for a year without problems before this suddenly started. I'm also now getting jagged flashes of light from the screen edges.
Also, I've already had an HP rep say they thought my issue was hardware related in another thread. They didn't use the word failure but I can read between the lines.
What developers are you talking to who observed the sequential eye-blackouts and in what software?
Update: I'll add that the symptoms do appear to be audio related as noted by Shallowstream above. Disabling the headset audio and removing the headphones completely stopped the blackouts.

Independent dev at Steam whom created TrainerVR. My VR headset would act erratic when I would enter the train and the train begins to climb the tracks. The Lenovo Explorer would turn the display on and off and just exhibit weird behavior. When I recently tried with the HP Reverb, the headset display would screw up the fov and change to a single eye view as if looking through a telescope. Then it would turn off and on so I just opted to not even bother with it for now.
The dev replied that I should turn off the comfort option in game settings which I've seen in other games too like Summer Funland to help mitigate the issue.
Just sharing a potential solution.

I was thinking about how you said your issue was kind of resolved by adjusting audio. Have you tried muting the mic completely in Windows via sound settings to see if the issue subsides completely even when the volume is high ?
It could be that Windows Cortana is listening to your mic and may cause some sort of issue with your system impacting performance. I disable Windows Cortona via the Windows policy settings to avoid potential conflicts and to free up resources.
Look up "Windows Cortana policy disable" via search engine and you should see instructions on how to disable it. Reboot afterwards and see if it helps remedy the issue.
