hello again.  here's a progress report - received 2x4gb ddr4 - 2400 udimm.  after installation, was met with the same 3long2short.  removed and repackaged rma in hand.  removed heat sink from CPU.  cleaned and applied fresh thermal paste.  no longer encountering beep code.  not exactly out of the woods yet, as I reset the bios by jumper AND by removing the battery, which I haven't fiddled with yet.  i expect it to work out, but having expected too much from life in general, I won't break something if it doesn't work out as expected.  don't wait up - don't worry about leaving the light on - it'll be daylight by the time I roll thru again but I will come back thru to let you know something.  thanks again.

thermal paste.  woot.

@FunLovinFelon , welcome back to the Community.

Three long beeps followed by two short beeps is a memory initialization error. This means that the memory has failed. If you only have one stick of memory it is very difficult to diagnose.  If you have more than one module you can remove all of them and add them back one at a time and boot.  Put the single module in the slot closest to the processor.

hi thanks for the info - tried both sticks each apart from the other and same beep pattern.  tried bios reset using jumper also by removing cmos battery to no avail.

any thoughts?  thanks again.

You are welcome, @FunLovinFelon!  Thank you for the additional information.

There is a slight possibility that both memory modules have failed.  This could happen if there was a major power surge in your area.  Otherwise, I can't come up with any more suggestions.

i'm grateful for your assistance in the matter.  would it make a difference if i told you that i had installed an ssd that I had removed from an HP pavilion gaming laptop directly prior to the computer failing to boot up?  i'm sure that's the missing link in the scenario.  installed the ssd, plugged in the power and got the beep code, powered down, drained caps, removed ssd thusly returning the computer to it's original config.  the ssd itself is back in the laptop and working as expected.  the desktop is still with 3 long and 2 short beeps.  is that the smoking gun needed to close the investigation lol??

many thanks, i wish you well.

You are very welcome, @FunLovinFelon!

If the computer is still doing the same 3 long and 2 short beeps after the SSD is removed it is most likely not the problem.

This is a difficult problem to solve since the computer won't boot.  There is no way to run diagnostics.  You may have to bite the bullet and take it to a shop that can run diagnostics.

i think the first bullet i'll bite is a couple sticks of ddr4 @ 2400mhz and hope for the best lol

i'm relieved to have not heard any mention of having bricked the box. you've gone above and beyond to engage this conversation, i'll leave it open and in a week or so let you know where i'm at with it.

@FunLovinFelon, I am always glad to help!  Sometimes there simply isn't a cut and dried solution.  I would appreciate hearing how things work out for you!  I'll be watching for an update.

Good luck!!
