Product info said it has 5.1 audio 

 

  • Audio Codec: ALC3866-CG

  • High Definition (Azalia) 5.1 channel audio support

    NOTE:

    The motherboard supports 5.1 surround sound. If the computer does not have the required audio jacks for a 5.1 configuration, additional hardware is required to use 5.1 surround sound.

     

    can anybody help me figure out what "additional hardware" i'll need? this pc has only 1 pcie slot, used by graphics card.

Audio jack presence detection

If it works, you need to use the different audio connectors..

sometimes even the front ports seem to me

see if you have the audio control panel
But if it can't work that way, you definitely need to install an audio card.
