Microsoft Windows 11

Hi

About 2 days ago I downloaded the hp diagnostic window to check for possible hardware issues(there was none). The app recommended a bios update, and ever since then my laptop has been crashing or just straight up freezing.

It's an hp pavillion 15 gaming laptop by the way. Is there any way to roll back to a previous version of bios or any other solution to fix this?

Hi @Jason1523,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion 15 gaming laptop is experiencing issues after a BIOS update, you can attempt to roll back to a previous BIOS version or try other troubleshooting steps to resolve the problem. Here’s how you can proceed:

1. Rollback BIOS to Previous Version

Using HP BIOS Recovery:

Turn Off Your Laptop:

  • Completely shut down your laptop.

Power On and Enter BIOS Recovery:

  • Press and hold the Win + B keys while also holding down the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release the Power button but keep holding the Win + B keys until you hear beeps or see the HP BIOS Recovery screen.

Select BIOS Recovery:

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to select BIOS recovery. This will use the last known good BIOS version stored in the BIOS backup.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • After the BIOS recovery process is complete, restart your laptop and check if the issue is resolved.

Using HP Support Website:

Go to HP Support Website:

  • Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page.

Enter Your Laptop Model:

  • Enter your laptop model number (HP Pavilion 15) and search for available drivers and BIOS versions.

Download Previous BIOS Version:

  • If available, download a previous BIOS version.

Create a BIOS Recovery USB Drive:

  • Follow the instructions on the HP website to create a BIOS recovery USB drive using the downloaded BIOS file.

Boot from USB and Flash BIOS:

  • Insert the USB drive into your laptop.
  • Restart your laptop and boot from the USB drive (usually by pressing F9 during startup to select the boot device).
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to flash the BIOS to the previous version.

2. Performing a System Restore

If the BIOS rollback doesn’t solve the issue, you can try performing a system restore to revert your system to a point before the BIOS update:

Open System Restore:

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.Type rstrui and press Enter.

Select Restore Point:

  • Choose a restore point that dates back to before the BIOS update.Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the restore process.

Restart Your Laptop:

  • Once the system restore is complete, restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.

3. Check for Additional BIOS Settings

Sometimes, BIOS updates can change certain settings that affect system stability. You can check and adjust these settings:

Enter BIOS Setup:

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 (or another key as indicated during startup) to enter the BIOS setup.

Load Default Settings:

  • Find the option to load default settings (usually under the Exit tab) and select it. This will reset BIOS settings to default.

Save and Exit:

  • Save the changes and exit the BIOS setup.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

So I followed the steps you provided and my laptop was running better than before, but I was still getting crashes when I I tried to run heavy games.

I ended up reseting my laptop back to Windows 10 and everything is running perfectly fine now
