OMEN by HP 875-1000 Obelisk Desktop PC (5MU99AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

The subject contains line about all the information I know to ask, but also, would the investment be worth the cost in terms of improving graphics processing of my primary games, Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane 12? I still get the message that my graphics settings are too high to achieve the minimally acceptable frame rate. The computer came with and still has the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super.

@montyrexmay,

Welcome to our HP User Forum!

You raised an excellent question.

Your OMEN By HP 875-1000 Obelisk Desktop PC (5MU99AV) is a highly adaptable and upgradeable gaming platform.  As such, it may very well be worth-it to continue to upgrade its graphics card potential.

Now to ascertain what we are dealing with, please stay with me.

According to: https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=5MU99AV, your PC is fitted with a 750-watt power supply, with p/n: L37964-800 "Power Supply - GNRC PSU 750W ES FR Ursa" -please verify.  If this is correct, then you'll have sufficient juice to power an RTX 4080 (see: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-4080.c3888).  When changing GPUs, please check its dimensions for fit inside your case.

And yes, in terms of raw Gaming power: an RTX 4080 blows the RTX 2080 Super out of the water: https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-4080-vs-Nvidia-RTX-2080S-Super/4138vs4050.

As far as I can ascertain, your desktop is fitted with an Edoras motherboard (SSID: 84FD).  Or it could be a Shire motherboard (SSID: 8509) -please confirm.

[EDIT:] Couldn't find any Omen by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-1xxx platforms fitted with an RTX 4080, other than its close relative RTX 4070 Ti: UserBenchmark: HP OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-1xxx Compatible Components.

Reason why I would like to know, is because it is not just the graphics card which will ensure a butter-smooth Gaming experience.  Your rig should also be paired with a fast primary (boot) M.2 NVMe SSD drive, sufficient RAM (at least 2 x 16GB in dual channel/rank mode) running at its top speed at 2666 MHz, and last but not least be fitted with a fast/powerful processor, specifically the i7-9700K (i7-9700KF) or i9-9900K (i9-9900KF).

Please note, that if you were to go the Upgrade route, you definitely want to increase the air cooling/flow in your PC.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,
