Originally, I bought my OMEN 40L Desktop GT21-0148z that came with a Ryzen 7 5800 and a Radeon 6600xt and recently I've been wanting to upgrade (because the new Indiana Jones game is coming out). I got myself a new Ryzen 9 5950x and a Radeon 7900 XTX on separate occasions. Originally when I got the GPU, nothing would load. I did a clean uninstall of any leftover drivers but all that would happen is the Omen boot screen would load for a split second and the fans would crank up to 100% with just a blank black screen. I returned it on the assumption that it was faulty and my 6600xt worked fine as if nothing happened.

Today, I got myself a Ryzen 9 5950x but when I properly installed it twice, all that would come up is a plethora of blue screens with various error codes (System Thread Exception Not Handled, Machine Check Exception, Troubleshoot The TPM, as well as many more that came and gone very quick). According to my system, the last time my BIOS was updated was mid 2023.

Originally, I thought that this was my luck getting a faulty component but now I'm thinking it could be more. Are Omen motherboards hardware locked where I have to get an entire new motherboard? Or is it something system related that I may need to do? Or just something that I have not thought of.

Side note: I upgraded my PSU to a Seasonic 1000 watt so I know that is not the issue.

Hi @KingPinRigatoni,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're facing significant issues with upgrading your CPU and GPU on your OMEN 40L Desktop.

Here are a few things to consider and steps you can take:

  • Compatibility Check: Ensure that your motherboard supports the Ryzen 9 5950x and Radeon 7900 XTX. OMEN systems typically have proprietary components and may not support all third-party hardware upgrades without specific BIOS updates or compatibility checks.
  • BIOS Update: Since your BIOS was last updated mid-2023, it's possible that a BIOS update is required to properly support the new Ryzen 9 CPU. Check HP's support website for your specific OMEN model to see if there are newer BIOS updates available that mention improved CPU compatibility.
  • Driver Cleanup: When switching GPUs, ensure you perform a thorough cleanup of the old GPU drivers. Sometimes leftover drivers can cause conflicts, leading to boot issues or crashes. Use tools like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) in Safe Mode to clean out any remnants of previous GPU drivers.
  • Hardware Installation: Double-check that both the Ryzen 9 CPU and Radeon 7900 XTX are correctly installed. Improper seating can sometimes lead to instability or failure to boot.
  • Power Supply: While you've upgraded your PSU to a Seasonic 1000 watt, ensure that all power connectors to the motherboard and GPU are securely connected. Insufficient power delivery can sometimes cause instability issues.
  • System Configuration: Reset your BIOS settings to default after updating or reflashing it. Sometimes manual settings can interfere with new hardware installations.
  • Motherboard Limitations: OMEN motherboards can sometimes have specific limitations or configurations that are required for certain hardware to function correctly. Check the OMEN user manual or contact HP support directly to verify compatibility and any special considerations.
  • Testing Components: If possible, test your new components (Ryzen 9 CPU and Radeon 7900 XTX) in another system to confirm they are functioning properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
