Windows Update recently downloaded a firmware update called "HP Inc. - Firmware - 15.17.0.0" and its installation failed.
When I rebooted I saw an error message stating:
(Begin error)
The System BIOS update failed.
Unable to get BIOS information from system or image file.
(End error)
I can see in the BIOS screen that I have a version F.15.
The newest (and recommended) BIOS update in the HP Support Assistant web site is F.13.
The F.13 update warns me (correctly, I think):
(Begin warning)
---------------------------
0886CF13
---------------------------
The BIOS you are trying to install is older than the current version in the unit, it might cause some functional risk if you install it.
Are you sure that you want to install it?
---------------------------
OK Cancel
---------------------------
(End warning)
What am I supposed to do about this??
The reason I started looking into this is because the audio is crackling. I tested with a Ubuntu USB boot stick and audio seems fine (but very low volume) under Linux. On Windows it starts crackling when, it seems, I move the mouse. Any ideas?

hi
so as not to mix everything up, I invite you to open another thread for the other problem..
The bios is already up to date, so no need to insist, disable automatic updates from hp support assistant, and windows update!
Personally, I don't have a problem with this, I just disabled the windows drivers option, but it seems many users, have no choice but to use a utility, so try directly:

Hi,
Thanks, but I always disable automatic Windows updates.
Problem is, I don't know if the BIOS update that fails to install is a newer version than my current BIOS or not.
When I try to install the update recommended by the HP utility, it tells me that the update is older than my BIOS, so I would expect the installer of the newer update to do the same if it weren't newer. So it is likely newer than my BIOS but then won't install. So still don't know what to do.
But thanks, your answer was more helpful than I would have expected in a forum!

hi
sorry, was that not clear in my answer?
if you currently have a version named f.15
whether you are told an F.13 version via hp support assistant or product page , the latter will be older , no doubt about this
on the other hand
HP Inc. - Firmware - 15.17.0.0" and its installation failed.
may not match the bios version that was installed
I have to find a subject that I had followed here, and it seems to me that it was the same type of problem
but I don't remember exactly
If it s this
0886CF
so here
finally it seems that it is not the last ( f.15 ) there is an f.16 here

but while waiting in doubt, do not touch anything

this one
So if we are in the same situation, I recommend that you don't insist, I assume that your computer is working fine as it is now...

The firmware update showed up in Windows Update again and upon install greeted me with this at reboot:
When I try to install the update using the HP installer, it tells me this:
The UEFI drive is the same 100 MB it always was. I doubt it can store something on C: to install in the BIOS because C is bitlocker-encrypted and hence likely not available for the BIOS.

"I can see in the BIOS screen that I have a version F.15."
and I told you not to insist if you already have the f.15 version

I gave you a solution above, in general the most effective
Personally, I just followed this one.
If I have updates, they are not automatic, I have to check them if I want to install them!
but according to many threads here, many users, say it doesn't work!
however I did nothing special, and always proceeded like that
