Crashes/reboot under load - high temp CPU

Hello all,

I'm owning a OMEN by HP Obelisk Desktop 875-0040nf65XX, CPU I7-8700 (no k), GTX1070, 16gb ram.

Im' using it for gaming, i have 25 years exp on pc, it is my first PC not build by myself. Im' making regular maintenance on it, undusting, thermal paste replacing, software udpates and so on...

When i'm gaming Warzone and other demanding games or even in win10 when booting, i have crashes and reboots, mainly when weather is hot and when it's more than 28°C/ 82°F in my room.

After some investigations, i'm 95% sure it comes from CPU temperature throttling when turbo boosting, CPU heats to +100°C/212°F, power levels to +135W (CPUID HWMonitor) = instant stop.

I've tried intel XTU and it's a good solution to my problem, locking turbo boost to 120-125W but i need to set the profile at every win10 startup. I can't find a way to make it as a default profile, since my cpu is not a K version. Even by putting a profile in the startup file, i have some more actions to do to fix it. It' annoying.

I don't have no more access to BIOS to disabled turbo boost or to reduce it (if possible) due to HP locked bios.

As the warranty is still on for 9 months, i don't want to replace yet the bad intel stock CPU cooling device.

Do you have any solution for me ?

Turbo boost and overheating CPU no longer suspected as more and more random crashes occurs when disabled and also when idle on win10 desktop.

Psu fan doesn't work, looks like my problem comes from overheating PSU. Corsair 550w ordered.

I'm also looking to upgrade cpu cooling with cooler master tx3, and something for the case.

Let me know if you have anykind of upgraded solution for cooling this case.

You will definitely get throttling when the CPU reaches 100C.  The Tjunction for it is 100C: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/126686/intel-core-i7-8700-processor-12m-cache-u...

You have done everything that I could have recommended to solve the heating problem.  The next thing I was going to suggest is testing the PSU.  I have seen a failing PSU cause the symptoms that you describe.

You were concerned about changing the CPU cooler, but it will not void your warranty if you don't damage any of the components.  I suggest that you consider a Corsair H55 Liquid Cooler:  https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Liquid-Cooling/Single-Radiator-Liquid-Coolers/Hydr... It would give you far better cooling than a standard cooler.  Before you buy one, however, I suggest that you make certain that you can mount the radiator properly.  You can contact Corsair's Tech Support for help.

Thanks for the advices,and for strengthening my point of view 🙂

I've installed a cooler master tx3 evo with artic mx4, temperatures now doesn't exceed 80°c in high load tests, and 60/70 in normal load but my room was also a bit cooler than the previous days. At idle it's also 10-12°c cooler than with the stock radiator.

No more crashes yet, but i'm waiting for some hotter weather to say if it definitely solved my problem.

I'm waiting for a seasonic psu to be delivered and will install it anyway, i think it will be better than the stock hp.
