I have an Omen HP25L Gaming Desktop PC. It was purchased in 2023. It is much more computer than I need because I don't really play any graphic intensive games. It has performed well except for some overheating when it was stuck in some processing loop. The computer would warn me that it was too hot and it would shut down, so I shut it down and when I looked at it, wow, it was really quite hot. I cleaned all of the fans and turned it back on and it was fine. That was maybe 6 months ago.

I finally decided to create a Windows Recovery Drive in case I ever have a problem with hardware. I bought a new 32 GB Sandisk flash drive and tonight I ran the Windows Recovery Drive app. The app formatted the flash drive, copied utilities, was backing up system files when a problem occurred. It told me a recovery drive could not be created.

Then a message flashed up but seemed to not come from the recovery app. It said a problem was found on my disk - NVME WD. BLACK Gen4 SDCPNRY-512G-1106. Part of the message said the disk was at 97% and the temperature was 33 C. I talked to Chat GPT and it suggested I check the Event logs for the time when the error occurred. I found an event "\Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block." Chat GPT also suggested I run chkdsk with /f /r. I ran this as an administrator from the command line and it said it could not do it now but if I choose it can perform on a restart. I said Yes, and closed all my windows and hit restart.

The computer restarted, performed the chkdsk operation successfully but then the computer said it needed to restart and it restarted without my input. Then an HP program started called HP Diagnostics. It took a long time for my mouse to become responsive but I finally was able to click OK on the language and it said my Diagnostics version was old and I needed to go to hp.com/go/techcenter/PCDiags. Before I could do that my system again said it had to restart with a stop code at the bottom NTSF_FILE_SYSTEM (0x24).

The PC started with the restart circle, but I got a pale blue screen that said I had several choices. I could shut off the computer, insert a recovery drive, try advanced options, one of which was to reinstall windows with my files intact. I tried the reinstall windows option and the system tried but failed. I tried to pick an option that said Continue on to Windows 11. That crashed.  I finally picked the shutdown option.

I am angry that this was all triggered because I finally decided to create a recovery drive. But also, I am angry that this PC's Harddisk only lasted 3 years and 4 months. Shouldn't electronics be more reliable???

Can someone please suggest a reliable brand that I can purchase to replace this mess? Or can someone estimate for me what an HP service center would charge to fix the Omen HP PC.

Any responses are very much appreciated.

Hi @dude12,

I understand your frustration, when a desktop fails after only a few years, it feels like it shouldn’t happen. From what you’ve described, the NVMe SSD in your HP Omen 25L is showing bad blocks and triggering NTFS errors, which indicates the drive is failing.

Since this is a hardware issue, the most reliable next step is to have the unit checked at an HP Authorized Service Center. HP service centers can:

Because costs vary by region and warranty status, only an HP service center can give you an accurate estimate. If your PC is still under warranty, the SSD replacement may be covered. If not, they will provide a quote for parts and labor.

Please contact your nearest HP Authorized Service Center for assistance.
