Lately, my Omen 25L Desktop PC (AMD 5800 with 3070) seems to crash whenever I launched any game. As it is no longer under warranty, I will need to get a suitable replacement for my RTX 3070, which I suspect is faulty.

What will be a direct drop in replacement GFX card that is better than RTX 3070, taking into consideration the GFX power connector, PSU, etc in my Omen 25L Desktop?

HP support quoted me almost US $3,000 (after discount) to replace the RTX 3070. Is that the norm for out of warranty component replacement cost?

Thank you!

Hi @Akhran,

Thank you for the response.

For an RTX 4070, you’ll need a 12VHPWR adapter because the card uses a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. However, most retail versions of the RTX 4070 come with an adapter that converts one 8-pin PCIe to 12VHPWR. Since your HP Omen 25L PSU has an 8-pin + 6-pin PCIe setup, you'll need to ensure that:

  1. Your RTX 4070 includes a 1x 8-pin to 12VHPWR adapter (most models do).
  2. If the adapter isn't included, you can get a PCIe 8-pin to 12VHPWR adapter separately.
  3. If you plan to upgrade later, consider a PSU with a native 12VHPWR cable for better power efficiency and reliability.

Would you like recommendations on specific adapter brands or PSU upgrades for future-proofing? 😊

Hi @Akhran,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding drop-in- replacement!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

For a drop-in replacement for your RTX 3070 in the HP Omen 25L, you’ll need to consider:

  1. Power Supply Compatibility – Ensure the PSU can handle a more powerful GPU.
  2. Physical Fit – The case size may limit GPU length.
  3. Power Connector Type – Your RTX 3070 uses an 8-pin + 6-pin PCIe power connector.

Best Drop-in Upgrades (Better Than RTX 3070)

Here are GPUs that will fit and work well without needing a PSU upgrade (assuming you have a 600W-750W PSU, which most Omen 25L models come with):

NVIDIA Options:

RTX 4070 (Recommended)

  • Power Requirement: 650W PSU
  • Power Connectors: 1x 8-pin (adapter required for 12VHPWR)
  • Better performance and power efficiency than RTX 3070.

RTX 4070 Ti

  • Power Requirement: 750W PSU recommended
  • Power Connectors: 12VHPWR (adapter needed)
  • 35-40% faster than RTX 3070.

RTX 3080 (If you find one at a good price)

  • Power Requirement: 750W+ PSU
  • Power Connectors: 2x 8-pin PCIe
  • Better than 3070 but older and more power-hungry.

AMD Options:

Radeon RX 7800 XT

  • Power Requirement: 650W PSU
  • Power Connectors: 2x 8-pin PCIe
  • Similar to RTX 4070 but better VRAM (16GB vs 12GB).

Radeon RX 7900 XT

  • Power Requirement: 750W+ PSU
  • Power Connectors: 2x 8-pin PCIe
  • Much faster than 3070, but check clearance in the case.

Let me know if you need further help.

Thank you for the information. May I know what kind of adapter (name or model) is required for RTX 4070 for the power connector?
