Hi @AvZteG,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're thrilled to have you on board!

Yes, you can definitely add another SSD to your OMEN 25L GT15-2000i, and I'll help you pick the best one.

First, let's talk about supported SSD types. Your motherboard can handle M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDs, which are the fastest, as well as M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSDs, which are backward compatible. If you need a slower option, a 2.5" SATA SSD will work too.

For the best performance, go for an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 SSD. Make sure it's 2280 in size, meaning it's 22mm wide and 80mm long. Look for speeds of at least 5000MB/s for reading and 4000MB/s for writing.

A capacity of 1TB to 2TB is great for gaming. If you want a more budget-friendly option, a PCIe Gen 3.0 SSD with speeds of around 3500MB/s also works fine.

For recommended SSD models, if you're looking for top performance, the Samsung 990 Pro (PCIe 4.0, 7450MB/s) and WD Black SN850X (PCIe 4.0, 7300MB/s) are great choices.

If you want the best value, consider the Crucial P5 Plus (PCIe 4.0, 6600MB/s) or Kingston KC3000 (PCIe 4.0, 7000MB/s). For budget-friendly options in the PCIe 3.0 category, the Samsung 970 EVO Plus (PCIe 3.0, 3500MB/s) and WD Black SN770 (PCIe 3.0, 3500MB/s) are solid picks.

Dear Kuroi_Kenshi,

Thanks you very much for your swift reply. Meanwhile I bought the Samsung 990 Pro 2tb ssd you were referring to. The extra ssd slot in my HP Omen 25L is probably below the graphics card. Does that mean that I would need to take measures to get rid of excess heat or is the Samsung ssd card as it is able to do that by itself? If I would need to take measures, what should these measures be?

With kind regards, Adriaan van Zon

Hi @AvZteG,

The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD does feature efficient built-in thermal controls, but the placement of the extra M.2 slot in your HP Omen 25L, directly beneath the graphics card, can present some challenges with heat buildup. Depending on your system's airflow, you might need to consider additional cooling measures.

If you have the version of the 990 Pro without a built-in heatsink, it’s a good idea to install a third-party M.2 heatsink to enhance heat dissipation. Being situated under the GPU can exacerbate heat accumulation, especially during intensive gaming or other high workloads.

To keep things under control:

Optimize airflow in your case. This might involve repositioning or adding extra fans.

Adjust the GPU placement if your setup allows, even by a small amount, to improve spacing and airflow.

Regularly monitor the SSD's temperature using tools like Samsung Magician or HWMonitor. If you notice temperatures surpassing 70°C (158°F) consistently, you might need to explore additional cooling options.
