Solved!

GTX 1060 to RTX 2060

HP Recommended
Omen 880-010
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Considering making an upgrade in GPUs. Just want to check if this is even feasible with specs or if there is a conflict.

Hello folks,

I have an Omen 880-010

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05813246

Currently has an HP 8309 1.0 motherboard and a Geforce GTX 1060 3gb  graphics card. considering an RTX 2060 6gb upgrade. I haven't even measured yet but still trying to figure out if I am missing anything just in MB capability as to whether this is an option.

Anyone see anything that I may be missing that would make this a no-go?

GPU slot is  PCI Express x16 physical slots (Gen 3.0). That is what is important.  AC Valhalla requirements

Pixel rate of the GTX 1060 is better than the RTX 2060, as stated here.    Pricing range of the RTX 2060 is also too varied.

MB capabilities? I would question the 8GB of RAM. What speed is it ? HP grabbed whatever, it could be DDDR4 2133, 2400, or 2666. And it is a single module, so it is running as single channel RAM.  Trying to match what you have in the machine is more than a new pair. A matching pair would enable dual channel mode.

Here is a pair of DDR4 2666 2x8GB. That would give you 16GB. Max would be 2 sets according to HP. (ie 4x8GB).

@Wb2001

Thank you for the response and the comparison chart.

RAM has already been upgraded to 32 gb in the past. Looking at the potential upgrade to the RTX 2060 for an improvement in FPS and performance in some of the newer games coming out like AC Valhalla (which the 1060 is struggling with regarding the more current generation of games being released).

When I say MB capabilities, what I really am (i guess confused about) is the motherboard being v1.0. With most of the cards I am looking at boasting PCIE 3.0 I guess I question whether I will be purchasing capabilities on the GPU that I will be unable to really take advantage of due to the version of the motherboard being 1.0.

Ultimately, regardless of pixel rate, I am going to take a leap of faith in saying gaming "performance" overall I would significantly improve according to other testing I have seen. I'm not sure though whether the motherboard is capable of opening the gate on what the 2060 can do. The card itself, given the ability to perform at its best should do what I am looking for it to do. I am just not sure if the motherboard will accommodate the 2060's best.

If that makes sense. I'm no pro, I know just enough to be dangerous to myself.

Perfect, I wasn't sure if I was getting caught in the weeds on the 1.0 of the MB.  Thanks for setting me straight.
