First I don’t know how I changed this thread to solved. Because It’s not.

second, Happy holiday and I hope things are well. I WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY UPCOMING NEW YEAR!

So I’m back to square 1. This time I received the 2 sticks of crucial 16GB DDRM 3200Mhz RAM. These work, and it sees all 32 GB. But it only works in single channel mode.

as mentioned my motherboard supports dual channel but I have to use slots 1 & 3, or 2 & 4. I haven’t played with it allot. But I tried both dual channels and neither boot. I get the 3 long 2 short beeps.

If I use dimm slot 1. & 2 it works fine. It Sees all 32 GB. Even says it’s running in 3200 MHz using CPUZ. But when I benchmark. It shows outstanding results but It recommends I use or turn on XMP. But there is no XMP in the BIOs. I’ve heard of software XMP with intel. Is there going to be that big of difference in games? Or rendering? (In single channel)  I played an 8K video, pull up WoW, the omen portal, and a bunch of browser tabs running content and it’s not utilizing half of what it was. I was at 86-90% with all my background apps, when stress testing like this before. It’s not using much at all. I’m around 20-25% is all.

i wonder if it could be the i7-7700K  processor, or the 1080Ti with 11GB RAM built in. I may have to take it to an IT guru. Or just stick to the original Samsung 16GB. I’ll do some real gaming on it tomorrow and see if I notice any spikes or lag.

interestingly enough TAMPA2 says no higher than 8 GB DDRM. I’m guessing that has changed with technology as crucial swore it’s would work fine. And it does, but it’s in single channel mode. Anyway, hate to keep asking opinions. If you have one I appreciate it. I’m not an IT guy. I understand the basics but this one has me puzzled.

Anyway, have a safe and happy new year!
Thank you

Markc76

@Markc76,

My disclaimer from the get-go was in my first response, and I quote: "If you didn't know it already, HP computers are finnicky when it comes to RAM and especially achieving max RAM speeds."

Unfortunately, you experienced just that.

Welcome to the club.

All right, when we look at desktop performance benchmarks fitted with your motherboard: Tampa2 (SSID: 8307) here: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-OMEN-by-HP-Desktop-PC-880-p0xx/60612, the "norm" is 4 x 8GB RAM, clocked at 2400 MHz, as in most frequently:

Samsung M378A1K43CB2-CRC 4x8GB
Hynix HMA81GU6AFR8N-UH 4x8GB
Kingston HP24D4U7S8MH 4x8GB
Crucial CT8G4DFD824A.M16FH 4x8GB
Micron 8ATF1G64AZ-2G3B1 4x8GB

However.

There are a few notable Tampa2 RAM speed outliers:

Kingston HyperX 2400 C15 fitted with 4x16GB (p/n: KHX2400C15/16G) clocked at 2400 MHz.

Wait.  It gets better:

Alternating 4x8GB Samsung M378A1K43DB2-CTD Kingston HP26D4U9S8HJ-8 M378A1K43CB2-CTD Kingston HP26D4U9S8HJ-8 (32GB) RAM sticks clocked at 2667 MHz: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/56367626.

But RAM Paradise doesn't stop here: Crucial CT16G4DFD832A.M16FR 4x16GB clocked at -brace yourself: a blistering aka whopping 3200 MHzhttps://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/53585535.

The point being: it IS INDEED possible to run your rig with 4 x 16GB RAM -and at a dazzling 3200 MHz, but there are no guarantees you'll be able to mirror/match that.

So, how did they do it?  Trial and error, most likely, since there are so few of these RAM Speed outliers.

Honestly, 4 x 8GB RAM will do just fine with all your Games.  The limiting gaming factor being how high end-ish your graphics card is, and of course your processor.  An i7-7700K paired with 32GB of RAM and a decent graphics card -which you have: a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB GDDR5X, should smoke any game you play at ultra 1080P settings and at least 60~80 fps performance.

Kind Regards,

Thank you NonSequitur777,

Yes, it does seem that way. Very finicky indeed. Well at least I can make it work at 32GB RAM. Ill see if its worth the performance or not going from dual channel to single. I may have to play with it some more. I did not have allot of time. It arrived late in the evening.  When I originally scanned using crucial they said these could actually be added to the Samsung RAM sticks. So I may add the Samsung back and then see if I can pair these in dual channel. That is what was recommended originally using this scan.

So that is the kit I bought. Took forever to get here. But at least its working.

Thank you for pulling all that data. You are so good at this.  It's great to know that the TAMPA can run at 3200 Mhz. I figured it would be defaulted to 2400 or 2666 MHz. Luckily my son's Omen 25L took the new Kingston RAM upgrade I bought him for Christmas and its been great its Kingston Beast RGB. It had come with a single stick, so I bought an upgrade kit. 8 GB is just not enough. 16 is really plenty, but I like not being so hard on things when multi tasking and gaming. His Omen is not at all as finicky.

From what I understand. HP is now starting to actually add XMP features in their newer OMEN 30L and 40L gaming computers. That's what I've heard. Overall, this computer has been awesome. Had I known the TAMPA2 would be so finicky I may have gone with something with an ASUS or MSI motherboard. But my guess is they all have their quirks.  And HP has been great to help me when needed and the support has been phenomenal during the warranty. I've bought nothing but HP the last 7 years for any of my family members. It's been worth it having their support. Anyway, thank you again. Ill call it closed this time. It is what it is.  Its one of those you just have to try multiple sticks and play with it to be sure it works the way you want it. Next year ill probably upgrade it all. I love the case design though and water cooling. So we will see when I have some money to burn. Have a happy new year and thank you again for all your help and support!

NonSequitur777,

Lastly, so you know. I  went back to look at Crucials scan. It said to add the new RAM to my existing Samsung RAM. After you sent me those benchmarks it made me remember that is how they sold it. I went back to opening it back up. I loaded one stick of Original Samsung. Good to go. Tried each slot again. No issues. I went to slots 1 & 3 and loaded both original RAM sticks. Loaded up fine as usual. Turned off cleared power and grounded myself. for the 100th time. I then loaded the 2x16GB RAM from crucial that was made for my second channel per their scan. It works! Its in dual-channel mode and it works great! It benchmarked nicely. Im still in high 110% UFO territory gaming and as a 104% workstation benchmarks. Running 48GB RAM. Like you say, you just have to try everything. They are finicky. But as closure, they are working and they are in Dual channel mode per CPUZ. Stress tests are great. I'll let you know if I get any errors down the road. But your help was sincerely appreciated. I feel like I'm finally there. Thank you again!

One word: Outstanding!

Again, I am glad that things worked out -never give up.  Trial & error.
