OMEN 30L Desktop PC GT13-1000a (207P7AV)

I was playing a game on the PC when it suddenly crashed.  I waited a day and tried to boot, but it failed.  I did some process of elimination and found that it can boot if I unplug the power cables to the GPU.  So there must be something wrong with my GPU?  When I try to boot with the GPU plugged in, the lights on the GPU flash for about .1 of a second then everything shuts off.

UPDATE: I plugged in a different GPU and it works fine.  This leads me to believe that something is wrong with my original GPU (RTX 3080) and it is preventing my PC from booting.  Anyone have any experience with something like this, or pointers of how to trouble shoot next?  I'd hope my 3080 isn't completely burnt, it only lasted 2 years if so.

To clarify, this is not a laptop, this is a desktop gaming pc.

I am not sure if you saw my UPDATE in my original post. In the process of elimination, I was able to figure out that the GPU was preventing the boot up.  I swapped it out with an older GPU I have, and my pc boots and works fine.   It is really unfortunate because the RTX 3080 only lasted me 2 years.  It is an HP manufactured 3080 and HP only offers a 1 year manufacturer warranty.  I will not buy from HP ever again and I hope anyone thinking about buying from HP sees this message.  It is not fair to the consumers to charge such a high price for a GPU that has such a short life span.  Since my PC was a pre built from HP, I am nervous to find out what other parts may be faulty in my pc… I guess time will tell.

I did not receive any private message.  My inbox is empty.  I found other users with a very similar issue to mine.  HERE is the link to their conversation on HP community.  My pc always did the same exact thing that they describe where it cannot boot up and flashes the LED’s for a moment.  I have a very strong feeling that there is some component in the Omen prebuilt pc‘s (which HP manufactures) is faulty and is likely causing this issue with booting AND harming other components in the PC.  My first guess would be the power supply but I do not have the budget or time to start replacing each component in this PC to identify the issue.

As I stated in the original post in this conversation, my 3080 died ( or at least it prevents my pc from booting).  I still need to try it in another pc to see if it is completely fried.  But I swapped in another GPU in and my omen pc does boot.  Although it boots up, I am still experiencing issues.  For example, if I boot up my pc then shut it down, then try to boot up shortly after (say 10 minutes after shut down) it will not boot.  Something is not right with these PC’s because other customers are reporting the same exact issue.  Why would it be able to run fine, then cannot power ip shortly after powering down?  It is very strange.  I usually have to wait 4 hours until it will respond to the power button.

I also notice that these pre built omen PC’s do not have a power switch like most other PC’s do.  So the only way to cut off power is by unplugging the power cord… what a brilliant design!  Other customers also express how inconvenient this is.

I am worried that whatever GPU I put in next will also be fried by the mysterious faulty HP components and I’m starting to wonder if I need to ditch this pc (more importantly, ditch HP) and start fresh.  Im nervous that whatever components I purchase and swap in will also endure the damage that the HP omen pre built inflicts.

anyways if anyone has had the same problem or some trouble shooting ideas, I’d a appreciate any kind of help here

Hi @fragrant

I see you are working with a couple of HP Reps. And your PC may be out of warranty unless you purchased an extended warranty.

My additional thoughts on your problem are as follows:

You must test the 3080 in a different PC or have a local PC Tech test this component. I'm saying this because you have stated a second, (known good??), graphics card installed in your MB is also having a similar issue. Is the second graphics card similar to the 3080 in power design and supplemental PSU connections?

The 3080 is a 320 watt TDP card. It needs two dedicated PSU PCIe connectors @ 150 watts each plus 75 watts from the PCIex16 socket.

Have you verified the second graphics card works correctly in a different PC?

Seeing a similar startup problem using a different graphics card could suggest your PC has: a possible power supply problem or an intermittent MB power delivery problem; the PSU may be shutting down (over voltage or over current only at startup) to protect the system.

Will the PC start with either graphics card if you disconnect the PC from AC power only instead of disconnecting the PSU PCIe power cables from the graphics card?

Two different graphics card doing the same thing would be very unusual.

Sorry let me clarify:

The PC does boot without any graphics card plugged in.  I have since tried 2 other graphics cards since the 3080 died, both work properly.  The pc will not boot with the 3080 plugged in.  I cannot try the 3080 in my old pc because, like you mentioned, the psu in my old pc only has 1 PCIe connector not 2.  So that is one issue: the pc will not boot with the 3080 plugged in.

A separate issue that seems to happen with all graphics cards and many other consumers have the same problem I see online: When you shut down the pc then want to turn it back on shortly after (within an hour of shutting down give or take) the pc will flash the LED and fail to boot.  At this point the power button becomes unresponsive and the only way to boot the pc is by unplugged the power source completely, holding the power button for 20-30 seconds, plugging the power source back in, then waiting about 10 minutes before trying to boot back up.    See this post , another user explaining the same exact problem.

So these are 2 separate issues, my 3080 died while I was playing a game and no longer works in my PC (I will need to get it tested by a local pc shop) but I am pretty sure it is completely dead.  And the second issue has always happened ever since I got the PC brand new.

And yes, I have verified the 2nd graphics card does work in another pc and has no problem shutting down then booting up immediately after.

I am not sure how to answer your last question. No pc in existence would start without a power supply.

i appreciate the help

Hi @fragrant

My pleasure.

I don't think my response suggested starting the PC without a graphics card.

I also thought you stated the second graphics card is causing a similar issue. Now you are saying two other graphics cards work correctly.

Other graphics cards working correctly suggest the 3080 had a problem at purchase. Other graphics card not working correctly suggest: the power supply or the MB has a problem.

I am very confused at this point.

The power supply could be the problem if this has been happening since day one and you have to disconnect/reconnect AC power to start the PC.

I never stated you should start the PC with no power. I did forget to suggest you should reconnect the power supply to AC power before attempting to start the PC. But that should be the standard procedure a rational individual would follow before restarting a PC; one would verify the PC has AC power before starting the PC.

I would suggest having a local PC Tech take a look at: the 3080 and your PC if you want to solve the problem.

I don't think anyone else in this Forum can assist any further.
