Dear Community Team,

I am experiencing a recurring issue with my HP OMEN 40L desktop, and I would appreciate your assistance in diagnosing and resolving the problem.

Issue Description

  • The computer frequently encounters a black screen, after which the fans start running at an unusually high speed.
  • When this happens, I have no choice but to manually power off the system.

Observations

  • The processor temperature seems abnormally high, ranging between 60°C and 70°C, even when the CPU utilization is around 10%.
  • All drivers, BIOS, and Windows updates have been installed, but the issue persists.

Steps Already Taken

  1. Updated all drivers, including GPU and chipset drivers.
  2. Updated the BIOS to the latest version available.
  3. Installed all Windows updates.

Despite these efforts, the issue remains unresolved ( The issue  occurs also when the computer is idle or resting, with no intensive tasks running). 

Could you please guide me on how to proceed? If additional diagnostics are required, let me know the steps to follow.

Step 1: Check for Overheating or Dust Build-Up:

 

High CPU temperatures can often be a sign of inadequate cooling. Here's what you can do:

  1. Turn off the system and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the case and check if there is any dust build-up around the CPU cooler and fans. Dust can block airflow and cause overheating.
  3. If necessary, use compressed ("canned') air to carefully remove the dust from the system.

 

If you're comfortable doing so, also check whether the thermal paste on your CPU needs reapplication (this is more advanced, so only do it if you’re experienced with PC maintenance). Use a quality thermal paste, such as Arctic MX-4.


Step 2: Check System’s Cooling Settings:

 

The issue might be related to the cooling settings in the BIOS or Windows.

 

  1. Enter the BIOS/UEFI by pressing Esc, then F10 during boot.
  2. Look for any cooling or fan control options and ensure they are set to automatic.
  3. Make sure that the CPU fan is running at the correct speed and is not malfunctioning.
