Battery 601 error.

Battery has never been used because it's always been plugged in.

Is there a way to keep the HP laptop from destroying the battery by charging it to 100% constantly so that I don't have to replace the unused battery regularly?

@hwweakarm,

Welcome to our HP community forum!

Yes, you can manage the charging behavior of your HP Pavilion laptop to prevent constant charging to 100%, which can help preserve the battery's lifespan. Here are some ways to prevent the battery from being overcharged:

1. Use HP Battery Care Functionality (if available):

  • Some HP laptops come with a battery care feature built into the BIOS or HP software, allowing you to cap the maximum charge level (usually around 80-90%) to prevent constant charging to 100%.
  • You can access this feature via HP Support Assistant or the BIOS.
  • To enable it:
    • HP Support Assistant: Open the app, go to the Battery section, and look for an option like Battery Care or Battery Health Manager.
    • BIOS Settings: Restart the laptop and press the key to enter BIOS (usually Esc or F10 during startup), then check the Power Management or Advanced sections.

2. Third-Party Battery Management Software:

  • If HP's tools don’t offer this feature, you can use third-party battery management software that allows you to set a charge limit, like Battery Limiter or Smarter Battery.

3. Manual Charging Control:

  • If no software control is available, a more manual approach involves unplugging the charger when the battery reaches around 80% and reconnecting it when the battery drains below 40-50%. While this method is less convenient, it can extend the battery life.

4. BIOS and Driver Updates:

  • Make sure your laptop's BIOS and battery management drivers are up to date, as some manufacturers release updates that improve battery charging behavior and efficiency.

5. Remove the Battery:

  • Since your laptop has a removable battery and you primarily use it plugged in, you can remove the battery to avoid wear on it. Just ensure the battery is stored in a cool, dry place with a charge level of around 40-60%, which is ideal for long-term storage. IMPORTANT: to avoid damage to your laptop and/or losing data while in operation, I would strongly recommend that you plug in your laptop to an UPS (uninterruptable power supply).

By taking these steps, you can help preserve the longevity of your battery and reduce unnecessary wear from constant full charges.

Kind Regards,
