  • Hi I have a HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop - 16- a0032dx and I’ve been having serious issues with performance and crashes.

    • Fortnite crashes consistently when I try to play, especially when changing settings or loading into a match.
    • I already did a full Windows reset, updated all drivers (including NVIDIA), used DDU to clean reinstall graphics drivers, and cleaned dust from the laptop.
    • I also noticed a CMOS checksum error once when booting up.
    • HP Support Assistant showed a vulnerability warning for HP Touchpoint Analytics Service, which I’m planning to update or remove.

Can you help me run a hardware diagnostic, check for BIOS or system updates, and guide me through any further steps to fix these crashes?

@CARSNCAPTURE,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Outstanding: you're already ahead of the game with everything you’ve done (Windows reset, DDU, NVIDIA drivers, dust cleanup, etc.)!

Let’s go step-by-step from here to rule out hardware faults and firmware issues that might be behind the crashes and CMOS warning.

1. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

Let’s rule out memory, SSD, or thermal problems:

  1. Shutdown the laptop.

  2. Power it back on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly to enter HP's UEFI Hardware Diagnostics.

  3. Run the Quick System Test.

  4. If nothing comes up, go ahead and run the Extensive Test (takes longer).

If any tests fail, jot down the failure ID code and post it here including your model #ABA number -to be found in System Information, to the right of "BaseBoard Product".

2. CMOS Checksum Error = BIOS or RTC Issue:

This error could indicate:

  • A BIOS setting glitch

  • A weak CMOS battery (less likely on laptops this new)

  • Or a pending BIOS update

Here’s what to do:

  • Visit your model’s support page:
    👉 HP Pavilion 16-a0032dx Drivers & BIOS

  • Download and install the latest BIOS update, even if the Support Assistant doesn’t flag it.

  • You can also reset BIOS settings manually by:

    • Rebooting and pressing F10 to enter BIOS

    • Choosing “Restore Defaults” or “Load Setup Defaults,” then Save & Exit

3. Fortnite-Specific Crashing:

Even after a clean install, Fortnite can be sensitive. Try this:

  • In NVIDIA Control Panel:

    • Under Manage 3D settings → Program Settings, add FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe

    • Set it to use the High-performance NVIDIA GPU

  • In-game settings:

    • Use DX11 instead of DX12

    • Turn off Ray Tracing and DLSS

    • Set everything to Low or Medium, then slowly adjust

  • Disable background software like HP Touchpoint Analytics, especially since Support Assistant flagged it as a vulnerability.

4. Thermal Check:

Download HWMonitor or HWiNFO64, then:

  • Run the game briefly and watch CPU and GPU temps.

  • If temps are spiking (90°C+), the system may be thermal throttling or triggering failsafes.

Also make sure:

  • Windows power settings are set to Best Performance

  • Laptop is used on a hard surface for airflow (a cooling pad wouldn’t hurt)

Let me know if diagnostics show anything, or if updating the BIOS clears the CMOS error. If needed, we can go further with power plan tweaks or firmware rollbacks.

Kind Regards,
