HP pavilion 590-p0020 upgrade

I want to upgrade the gpu in my HP pavilion 590-p0020 but I’m not sure what I can put in. I see other people saying the psu needs to be upgraded or the case needs to be bigger. I wanna know if anybody could give names of specific parts that would work in my computer. I’m not a super hardcore gamer so I don’t need anything crazy but I need something to increase fps in some games. I already installed 32gb of ram and a 1tb SSD card. I’m no expert when it comes to computers and this would really help me out.

Well, I have got good news for you.

Your HP pavilion 590-p0020 (3LA13AA), according to: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05950241, is fitted with a 180-watt power supply, which limits your graphics card options quite a bit.

However, there are three more powerful power supply upgrades available for your desktop, a 310-watt, 400-watt and a 500-watt power supply:

Of these three PSU options, I would strongly recommend the 400-watt power supply (HP p/n: L04618-800) and is also the most affordable (around $74) -and is fitted with one 6+2-pin PCIe power cable, which opens up many graphics card options: HP L04618-800 for sale | eBay.

In terms of graphics card options, please provide a budget/how much you want to spend for a graphics card.

Point is, my friend, that the 400-watt L04618-800 power supply is specifically endorsed by HP for the HP Pavilion 590-p0020d:

Yes, I don't disagree that some folks had some issues with the 400-watt power supply -just as some folks had some issues with the 500-watt power supply too, by the way -but I digress.

My recommendation stands: buy the 400-watt L04618-800 power supply from a US Seller who allows for (free) returns in the off-chance that there are issues, like this purchase option: 400W L04618-800 Power Supply Fit HP 280 288 285 480 600 680 800 G3 G4 L76557-001 | eBay.

For less than $200, an affordable yet decent graphics card option for your desktop powered by a 400-watt power supply would be an RX 6600 8GB GDDR6, such as for sale here: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=rx+6600&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&LH_BIN=1&LH_PrefLoc=2..., any of the two-fan (smaller sized) graphics cards options.  I would choose a well-established "Top Rated" Seller who allows for returns in case there are issues -this should be standard protocol whenever you buy something via eBay.

I installed both psu and gpu and it seems to be working well but it was a tight fit. At high power consumption it buzzes though is this normal?

What unit is buzzing: the PSU or the graphics card? -And what PSU did you decide to install?

Why don't you download and run MSI Kombustor, which is a freeware graphics card benchmarking utility program, from here: https://msikombustor.com/#MSI_Kombustor_Download_for_PC.

[EDIT:] Just realized that I had set my graphics card's fan speed at a fixed 40%: changed that to "Auto" (automatic) in the Asus GPU Tweak III overclocking software, so that my RTX 3080 would comfortably run the MSI Kombustor program at considerably lower temps and at high (90+) FPS framerate:

Using my HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF, when you start up MSI Kombuster, you'll see this:

Adjust "Resolution" to your monitor's resolution (in my case 2560x1440) and before you hit: "RUN stress test", also run Task Manager, select "Performance", and then "GPU". Run MSI Kombustor for about 5 minutes, and please record the Task Manager's "GPU Temperature", as seen here (64 °C), for example:

Also, please record the MSI Kombustor's "SPEED", "GPU LOAD", and check that the "ARTIFACTS" shows "0 / 0", as seen here:

Thanks for the response. The gpu is what seems to be buzzing. I've only heard it happen while playing games and only for a short time period. Once it happened I checked my settings and it seems to happen when the gpu draws over 90 watts of power or when the clock speeds go up. This sound didn't happen a single time during the MSI Kombustor though. I wasn't able to add the video but here are some screenshots.
