OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop GT22-0010nw
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

Driven by thoughts that if it's the same manufacturer (HyperX = Kingston now) it will work fine (and sticking to my desktop's specs I found on HP's site), I recently bought Kingston Fury Beast DDR4 3733MHz CL19-23-23 1.35V XMP 32GB (2x16) RGB RAM and installed in my HP Omen 45L in slots 1 and 3 (it has 2x8GB HyperX Fury RGB ["HyperX XMP RGB 16 GB, PC4-29800 MB/s, DDR4-3733" according to forementioned specs] in slots 2 and 4) .

After that I saw in Task Manager that I have 48GB of RAM, but it's speed dropped down from 3200 to 2400Mhz (CPU-Z was showing the same)... So I went to BIOS and turned the XMP 1 profile, that was supposed to speed up RAM to 3733MHz... I rebooted into Windows, but both Task Manager and CPU-Z were showing 2900something MHz. Additionally, CPU-Z was showing, that Kingston RAM was working in Dual Channel mode, but HyperX RAM was working in Single Channel mode.

When I got back to BIOS it turned out that XMP 1 profile got "corrupted" and now was showing that 2900something MHz...

Additionally, Kingston's Fury Control app couldn't recognize the HyperX RAM and was able to control only one of the Kingston's sticks (the one in slot #3). OMEN Gaming HUB doesn't recognize Kingston's RAM in Light control at all (both basic and Light Studio).

When I removed the Kingston RAM, Windows was unable to boot up - desktop was running, but there was no video signal. I'm not sure what happened, but after a while (and few retries) Windows finally booted up.

Now I'm running only on Kingston's RAM (and it's working without any problems on 3733MHz, in slots 2 and 4), but having 32GB instead of 48GB wasn't the goal...

Is it possible to make those RAMs work together without any issuses? Or do I need to sell the HyperX RAM sticks and buy another Kingston's 2x16GB (After my warranty wears off of course)?

@rysiumasakra,

Welcome to our HP Community Forum!

As a general guideline, you'll get best RAM performance by installing the same RAM: same brand, model and capacity.  That is especially true for Omen gaming desktops as you can see for yourself here: UserBenchmark: HP OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop GT22-0xxx Compatible Components.

Meaning: with almost no exceptions, HP-branded Kingston RAM shows the best RAM performance in your desktop: Kingston HP37D4U1S8ME-8XR or Kingston HP37D4U1S8MR-8XR 2 x 8 GB or 4 x 8GB.

The very best RAM performance, not surprisingly, is reserved for HP-branded Kingston 16GB RAM pairs (2 x 16GB or 4 x 16GB):

Kingston HP37D4U1S8ME-16X 2 x 16GB or 4 x 16GB running at 3733 MHz: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/65022917.

Kingston HP37D4U1S8HC-16XR 2 x 16GB or 4 x 16GB running at 3733 MHz: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/54928890.

Incidentally, some Users were able to crank up their Kingston HP37D4U1S8ME-16XR 2 x 16GB to run at 4000 MHz:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/58579141.

One of the few non-HP-branded RAM options running at 3733 MHz: Kingston HyperX KHX3733C19D4/16GX 2 x 16GB: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/52768708.

Hope this was helpful.

Kind Regards,

Edit 11.03.2024:

Ok, it seems that I won't receive any reponse here anymore, so...

TO WHOEVER WILL BE READING THIS:

I don't know why (can only imagine), but HP designed their OMEN desktops in a way that, at least in terms of RAM, makes using parts other than "HP branded" (the ones with "HP" in serial numbers I suppose) highly problematic.

After contacting Kingston's technical support about my problems with RAM mentioned above, they confirmed that OMEN's ones won't cooperate with Fury Beasts and they do not recommend using Fury Beasts in OMEN systems (in the worst case, it may even cause damage to the motherboard).

Additionally, if you want to stick to RAM sticks that came with your OMEN, keep in mind that they are available only in the US HP's store (at least I was unable to find them elsewhere other than eBay (used ones)), and they don't ship them outside of the US (at least for the time of writing this).

I can't say a bad word about my OMEN desktop, I really like it. It works flawlessly and I love how it looks.

But I don't quite understand HP's practices, especially that they advertised OMENs as dedicated for PC enthusiasts... and being a PC enthusiast leads to upgrading/changing the hardware at some point...

@NonSequitur777, thanks for your quick reply.

So you're telling me that my best choice is to look for second-hand parts on eBay, that are more expensive than new ones from the same manufacturer only because they ate "HP-branded", and HP hasn't provided any new spare parts for longer term?

That sounds like Apple BS a lot... "Pay us tons of $, but you can't unlock true potential of your device because you will be unable to use it"...

Here are the specs of the HP37D4U1S8MR-8X part you mentioned (I have the ones with "R" at the end, with the huge "KINGSTON" on the lable next to part number):

Screenshot_2024-03-07-08-03-02-350_com.opera.browser_1.jpg

Here are the specs of the HP37D4U1S8HC-16XR:

And I will post my current RAM's specs once again:

Kingston Fury Beast DDR4 3733MHz CL19-23-23 1.35V XMP 32GB (2x16) SDRAM, 288-pin, PC4-29800

And now HP is trying to tell me that those RAMs are so different that they can't work together? And I need to buy the HyperX ones from HP shop? Well, in fact I can't even buy any RAM you mentioned, because they are not available outside of US online store (which ships only to US)... at least the new ones...

The desktop itself performs really well and I'm really happy using it (at least for now), but I'm not sure I will recommend anyone buying anything from HP anymore.

Do you maybe happen to know if I may run into similar problems if I'll be wanting to change any of the hardware (because, I now assume, everything should be "HP-branded")? Or the first step should be changing the motherboard to get  rid of any HP software completely that is aftermarket-unfriendly?
