Recently, I had walked away with my computer open and logged in. No one was in the room at all except for me and I come back only to find my laptop sounding like a jet taking off and a firmware and BIOS update being installed by HP. I was curious if this is a new thing where updates like that are automatically pushed onto devices without user consent or if this is somehow related to a virus. If this is indeed a thing that will happen, how can I turn off automatic updates like that?

@Name_Here , welcome to the Community.

You can turn off Automatic Updates in Win 11 by going into Settings/Windows Update.  There you can turn them off permanently or simply delay them for a period of time until you have a chance to review them.  I suggest manually updating at least once per week to keep your data safe.

Here is an article that explains it further.
