Hi guys,
the HP 34c seems to have terribly implemented LFC, kicking in at 60fps.
During games if the fps dips below 60, LFC will kick-in and double the FPS to 120, causing really annoying brightness flicker, how on earth do i stop it?
As you can see below, the fps hits 60, then goes up to 120 causing large flicker in scenes. Btw I have a 75 fps cap in Nvidia, really annoying the monitor is doing this.

Hi @JacobP95,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding screen flickering on HP monitor!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Disable G-Sync/FreeSync – Go to NVIDIA Control Panel > Set up G-Sync and turn it off to see if the flickering stops.
Increase FPS Cap – Set your FPS cap to 80-85 FPS in NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Max Frame Rate to avoid LFC triggering at 60 FPS.
Change Refresh Rate – Go to Windows Settings > Display > Advanced Display Settings, and set your refresh rate to 165Hz or 144Hz manually.
Check Monitor Settings – Open the monitor’s OSD menu and look for options like Adaptive Sync, Dynamic Brightness, or Variable Backlight, try turning them off.
Update Firmware & Drivers – Update your monitor firmware (check HP’s website) and graphics drivers (via NVIDIA GeForce Experience).
Try these steps one by one and see which works best! 😊
I'm glad I could help! 😊 If this resolved your issue, please mark it as "Accepted Solution" and click "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?"—your feedback not only keeps us going but also helps others find the solution faster! 👍✨

Hi Kuroi_Kenshi,
The issue is with freesync so yes disabling g sync resolved this issue, but disabling features I paid for is not a solution
Capping my fps to 80 reduces the issue slightly, but when the fps drops down the screen continues to flicker.
Changing Refresh rate to 100hz and 120hz did not make a difference, but at 100hz LFC did stop (as it can't double 60fps to 120 anymore). It looks from my findings that LFC was indeed making the flickering worse, as it was switching from 65 to 120 fps rapidly (doubling the frame as intended), however it appears the flicking is the freesync implementation on this monitor, it needs a firmware update to stop it modifying the contrast/brightness when the refresh rate is lowered, or a complete disable of LFC to prevent the greater fluctuations.
Turning off adaptive sync in the monitor settings disabled g-sync, not a solution.
There are no other options such as dynamic brightness or variable backlight on the 34c
Graphics drivers are the latest 572.47
Please escalate this to the devs to update the firmware, i'm happy to test firmware packages with them
This monitor is advertised as 'flicker free', so this needs to be resolved asap

Hi @JacobP95,
Thank you for your response, It sounds like you're facing a frustrating issue with flickering on your HP OMEN 34c monitor when using VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and FreeSync/G-Sync. I understand that disabling certain features like G-Sync might temporarily resolve the issue, but that's not an ideal long-term solution, especially since you purchased the monitor with those features in mind.
The flickering you're experiencing seems to be related to the LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) behavior with FreeSync, which can cause screen brightness and contrast fluctuations when frame rates drop below the monitor's lower VRR threshold. Here's a breakdown of how to approach solving this:
Steps to Troubleshoot and Resolve the Issue:
Firmware Update:
- Since the issue likely relates to the firmware managing FreeSync and LFC, you should contact HP support and report the issue, requesting a firmware update to improve FreeSync and LFC handling. As you mentioned, you're willing to test new firmware versions, so this would be a great step forward.
- HP might already be aware of this issue, and an update could resolve the inconsistent flickering and contrast changes.
Force Disabling LFC (Low Framerate Compensation):
- If the flickering is caused by LFC trying to double frames, disabling LFC would help. Unfortunately, not all monitors allow you to manually turn off LFC, but you can try:
- Using a different refresh rate: You've already tried 100Hz and 120Hz, but ensuring your refresh rate is set at 100Hz can sometimes help avoid LFC, as it's the threshold where LFC might become problematic with VRR.
- FPS Capping: Capping the FPS to a value that avoids going too low (like capping it to 80 FPS as you mentioned) can prevent the frame rate from dropping to a point where LFC needs to intervene.
Adaptive Sync and Brightness Adjustment:
- You mentioned that the Adaptive Sync option in the monitor settings disables G-Sync, but this does not provide a proper fix. If there is no option to disable dynamic brightness or variable backlight, it might be related to how FreeSync interacts with these features. If there's no way to adjust the monitor's brightness settings manually or via software, the firmware update is likely the key to stopping brightness adjustments while VRR is active.
Graphics Driver Settings:
- While you're already on the latest drivers (572.47), it’s worth going back into the NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Radeon Settings and manually adjusting the VRR settings.
- For NVIDIA cards: Disable G-Sync in the NVIDIA Control Panel and test if that resolves the issue. You might also want to ensure that V-Sync is disabled, and Frame Rate Cap is set in the game settings to avoid low framerates.
- For AMD cards: Ensure that Radeon FreeSync is configured properly, and that VRR is enabled correctly. You can try enabling or disabling Enhanced Sync or Radeon Chill to see if they have any impact.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
