My OMEN gaming laptop will randomly put itself to sleep whenever I'm playing a game. It's not shutting off - all my applications remain open when I turn it back on. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when or why it puts itself to sleep. Sometimes I can play a game for an hour and have to problem, other times it'll go to sleep in five or ten minutes. The size of the game also doesn't seem to matter, as I've had this issue while playing large games like Monster Hunter Wilds and small ones like Tiny Glade. Some times I can get it to turn right back on, other times it'll try to start back up and then go to sleep again. I don't have any issues if I'm not running a game.
I had this problem for the first time in May or June of last year, and it occurred several times over the next few months, but it wasn't very frequent and it eventually stopped. I began having the issue again about two weeks ago and can't get through a gaming session without the device going to sleep at least once.
I've ran multiple tests on the laptop (a system check, CPU stress test, temperature/fan checks, etc) and it has passed every single one. All my drivers and my system are up to date. I've taken several precautions to make sure the device doesn't overheat (plenty of ventilation beneath the device and having a fan on in the general area), and it doesn't seem to be overheating when it goes to sleep.
Extra info that might be important:
After the issue began, I was instructed by a friend to check C:\Windows\Minidump and decode the file in it. There was an error that read "MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS (44)".

Hi @Rae613,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful breakdown — you've done a lot right so far. From what you've described, your OMEN laptop is unexpectedly entering sleep mode during gameplay, despite normal temperatures, good ventilation, up-to-date drivers, and clean hardware checks. That mysterious, random sleep behaviour, especially only during gaming, paired with the MULTIPLE_IRP_COMPLETE_REQUESTS (0x44) BSOD code, is an important clue.
To disable sleep transitions:
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Run: powercfg -h off
powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 0
powercfg /change standby-timeout-dc 0
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-ac 0
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-dc 0
💡 You won’t see feedback, but these commands disable hibernation and set idle timeouts to “never.”
1. Then, go to:
- Settings > System > Power & Battery > Screen and Sleep
- Set "On battery" and "When plugged in" for both screen and sleep to “Never”
2. Disable Lid Sleep and Power Button Sleep Behavior
Sometimes the lid sensor or sleep button gets triggered by minor flex or phantom signals.
✅ To adjust:
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options
- On the left panel, click “Choose what closing the lid does”
- Set all dropdowns to “Do nothing”
- Click “Save changes”
🛑 If your OMEN sometimes sleeps again after waking up, this step may be crucial.
3. Update BIOS and Firmware via HP Support Assistant
Even if drivers are updated, firmware or BIOS may not be. HP has released sleep/standby fixes for OMEN machines via BIOS updates.
✅ To do this:
- Open the HP Support Assistant
- Go to Updates > Check for updates
- Apply BIOS, Embedded Controller (EC), or any System Firmware updates
🔊 You might hear the fan ramp up or laptop restart — this is normal during firmware updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your assistance!
I've tried the recommended actions and have seen improvement in the issue. Having checked the Event Viewer, I've noticed the remaining problem is, in fact, due to overheating. Following the BIOS update and other adjustments I made, I am now able to play some games without the laptop hibernating! The ones causing it to overheat are both very GPU and CPU heavy and are likely putting more strain on the device that the other games I'm currently able to play. I believe the thermal paste has likely dried out due to how much I use the laptop, and will be getting it reapplied in the near future.
Thanks again!

Hi @Rae613,
You're very welcome — and it's great to hear that the situation has improved!
You're right in your diagnosis. GPU- and CPU-intensive games can push thermal limits, especially on laptops where space is tight and cooling is limited. If you've already updated the BIOS and made optimisations, then reapplying thermal paste sounds like a smart next step. Over time, it can dry out and lose its effectiveness, leading to overheating just like you're seeing.
Wishing you cool temps and smooth gaming ahead! 🎮💻🔥|
