@Sham_SD,

Title: HP Victus 15 (i5-13420H, RTX 4050) - Low GPU Usage & High CPU Usage in Marvel Rivals

Issue: You're experiencing high CPU usage (100%) and relatively low GPU usage (60-70%) while playing Marvel Rivals on your HP Victus 15-fa1xxx with an Intel Core i5-13420H, RTX 4050 (6GB VRAM), and 16GB RAM running Windows 11. You've noticed others getting higher GPU usage and lower CPU usage in the same game.

Possible Causes & Fixes:

1. Ensure the Game is Using the RTX 4050:

  • Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings > Program Settings.

  • Select Marvel Rivals and set Preferred graphics processor to High-performance NVIDIA processor.

2. Adjust Power & Performance Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and set it to Best Performance.

  • Ensure your laptop is plugged in while gaming.

3. Update Your GPU & Chipset Drivers:

4. Monitor CPU & GPU Temperatures:

  • Use HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to check CPU and GPU temperatures.

  • If CPU is overheating (>90°C), consider using a cooling pad or repasting the thermal compound.

5. Adjust In-Game Settings:

  • Lower CPU-heavy settings such as shadows, crowd density, and physics.

  • Enable DLSS or FSR (if available) to reduce CPU load and shift work to the GPU.

6. Close Background Apps:

  • Open Task Manager > Startup and disable unnecessary startup programs.

  • End background processes that might be using CPU power.

7. Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics Settings and enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.

Let me know if these steps help!

Kind Regards,

Hey there! I hope you are having a great day. I am replying you to give you an update of my situation. I have tried all your steps however were no solution to my issue. I am still facing the problem where my cpu usage is still 100% and gpu usage is low. Not only in marvel rivals I have also tested out in other games such as CSGO 2 where the cpu usage is less compared to marvel rivals how ever compared to gup usage (40%-50%) the cpu usage (70%-80%) is still higher in CSGO 2.

@Sham_SD,

OK, let me approach your question from a different angle.

1.) Do you experience (over)heating / thermal throttling / graphics artifacts (e.g. graphics stuttering, lines across your screen, etc.)?

2.) What fps (frames per second) are you getting while playing your games, and are the games you play playable in your opinion?

3.) Do you experience excessive noise emanating from your laptop?

4.) Have there been any error messages or other issues you haven't mentioned yet?

I experience excessive noise. Sometime huge frame drops going from 120 to 40 fps. Without frame generation I get 110-120 fps on low settings  however one of my friend has the same laptop he gets 150+ frames even on high settings with much less cpu usage and high gpu usage. How ever there were no error messages. Also the temperature issue my cpu reached 80 degree celsius yesterday while gpu temperature remain relatively low around 65-70 degree celcius. Furthermore I havent seen any screen tearing graphics stuttering etc its just that my games gets power from cpu most of the time where as the games dont utilize the gpu to its full potential.

@Sham_SD,

It is too bad that I can't take a close-and-personal look at your gaming laptop, because I would like to fix it for you, just like I helped out one of my sons who has a high-end gaming laptop. Anyway, perhaps it would be helpful if you and your friend could get together and compare each and every setting one by one.

In the meanwhile, I would like you to watch this performance/optimization YouTube video and apply all of the optimizations that Panjno recommends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkJBDEDDS5o&t=1582s&ab_channel=Panjno.  Yes, this was designed for Windows 10, but it also applies to W11.  Only thing you must do different is found at timestamp 17:12, where Panjno says to add seven f's (NetworkThrottlingIndex), but that should be eight f's, like so: ffffffff

Once you're done, restart, and see if these steps make any difference in your gaming.

Kind Regards,

Hey! I hope you are having a great day. I appreciate your help a lot. I need one more help from you and that is can you give some tips on bios settings. I heard switching to my dedicated gpu from bios might help. But i did not find any option there. Can you help with that? Also suggest some optimization settings for bios. Thank You.

@Sham_SD,

I appreciate your kind words!

Without further ado, here we go:

Switching to the Dedicated GPU in BIOS:

Most HP gaming laptops, including the Victus by HP 15-fa1000, do not have a direct BIOS setting to force the system to use the dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce) exclusively. Instead, GPU switching is controlled by Windows and NVIDIA Optimus. However, you can manually adjust settings to ensure that demanding applications use the dedicated GPU:

  1. Through NVIDIA Control Panel

    • Right-click on your desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
    • Go to Manage 3D settings > Global Settings.
    • Set Preferred Graphics Processor to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
    • Under Program Settings, assign specific applications (e.g., games) to use the dedicated GPU.
  2. Through Windows Settings

    • Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings.
    • Browse for your game/application, then set it to High performance (which forces the dedicated GPU).

BIOS Optimization Tips for Performance:

While BIOS settings on HP laptops are generally locked down, here are some key adjustments you can try:

  1. Enable Hybrid/Discrete Graphics (If Available)

    • Enter BIOS by pressing F10 at startup.
    • Look under Advanced Settings (if accessible).
    • If there’s an option for Hybrid Graphics Mode, try enabling or disabling it to see if it impacts performance.
  2. Ensure Memory is Running at the Correct Speed

    • If you upgraded RAM, check in BIOS (F10) if the correct speed is detected.
  3. Disable CPU Power Limits (If Available and Safe to Do So)

    • In some cases, disabling power-saving features like Intel SpeedStep may improve performance, but battery life will suffer.
  4. Make Sure Resizable BAR is Enabled (If Available)

    • This can improve GPU performance in supported games.
  5. Update BIOS for the Latest Fixes

If you’re experiencing performance issues, also ensure drivers (GPU, chipset, etc.) are up to date via Windows Update, NVIDIA’s website, or HP Support Assistant.

Kind Regards,
