OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop PC GT16-0000a (9X4U4AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello all.

So my Omen isn't handling my games well at 1440p and it looks to be a CPU bottleneck. I have a 4070 ti super and a Ryzen 7 8700g and it is struggling to maintain 140fps on high settings for a few different games.

I'm basically looking to upgrade to the best possible CPU for this model. I mainly bought this model because I wasn't very knowledgeable about PC upgrades and building etc but the marketing/reviews all said that it was a good start for upgrading and you could add to it as you went.

I'm looking at getting a 9800x3d if possible and called HP support to see if this was compatible with the wolant 8cf4 board. I was told it was but the agent only mentioned the AM5 socket as rationale for why it is compatible. I have seen videos and comments online of people trying to upgrade omens to Ryzen 7 9000 series and it just not booting so I just wanted to be sure.

I understand that the socket would FIT a 9800x3d but is the Wolant 8cf4 compatible with a Ryzen 7 9800x3d and if not, what are my options for upgrading without having to basically start a whole new build.

(Edit - I have downloaded the latest BIOS update if that makes any difference)

Greetings @Tee031

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer to your question but it is very difficult to find a HP Document (I could not find one) listing 8CF4 MB CPU support.

Yes, a typical retail B650 MB will support a 9800X3D CPU when the bios has been updated to support this processor.

This HP BIOS update, in the fixes section, shows a fix which refers to a Granite Ridge CPU hang at power on. The AMD 9800X3D is a Granite Ridge CPU.

The AMD 8700G is a Phoenix CPU.

The TDPs for each CPU are vastly different.

Since HP do not provide VRM specifications it is difficult to say if your MB can support the 9800X3D CPU.

Maybe a different Forum member having hands on experience in doing this upgrade can assist. You may have a 50/50 chance the 9800X3D will work with your MBs latest BIOS update (per above) using CPU support information provided by HP.

@Tee031,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

According to HP's specs, the best compatible processor (for now) that could be installed in your HP OMEN 35L Gaming Desktop GT16-0xxx as fitted with the Wolant motherboard (SSID: 8CF4), is the Ryzen 7 8700G (8-Cores, 16-Threads, 4.20 GHz up to 5.1 GHz, 65-watt TDP).

That is not to say that in future BIOS upgrades, HP could add other Socket AM5 processors, but for now, this is it. Also verified here: https://www.userbenchmark.com/System/HP-OMEN-35L-Gaming-Desktop-GT16-0xxx/340863.

The latest BIOS upgrade is F.09 Rev.A, released on January 13th, 2025: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/omen-35l-gaming-desktop-pc-gt16-0000a/2102217333.

Btw, I am not convinced that your processor is the bottleneck.

How much and what RAM do you have, and at what speed does it run?

What drives are you using, both for your primary (boot) and secondary drives?

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D uses the AM5 socket, but motherboard compatibility isn’t just about the socket—it also depends on BIOS support and power delivery. If HP confirmed compatibility, check if there's an official BIOS update that explicitly adds support for Ryzen 9000 series CPUs. Many OEM boards have limited upgrade paths, so you might need to consider a new motherboard if it doesn’t boot. Have you found any reports of successful upgrades on the Wolant 8CF4?
