OMEN by HP 45L Gaming Desktop PC GT22-1000i (6C1R9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello...I want to upgrade my stock RTX 4090 with a 5090 (purchased).  I did the research and determined the power supply and cooling system in my Omen 45L will support the 5090.  I also carefully watched the GPU upgrade video on the HP site.  When I opened the case...surprise!  Bracket is completely different than the one in the video (video shows a short plastic retaining bracket on the right side, but I have a long metal bracket).

I was able to get the metal bracket off after removing the extra screws.  Removed the power supply (also different from video).  Pressed detach lever on main board, but the card wouldn't budge.  Checked for other retaining screws, couldn't see any.  Tried pressing the lever again and it broke off!

The supplied 4090 card isn't coming out.  Evidently there's another hidden screw(s) holding this thing on that I can't see.  The video is completely worthless.

I should say that I've already posted on this board for help, but the person who responded (while very nice) apparently thought the video for the 45L was accurate as well and was therefore of no help to me.  I bought my Omen less than a year ago, has the chassis changed?  I will post a pic if anyone needs it, but only if they're certain they are familiar with my specific issue...thanks!

Hello Kuroi,

I appreciate your getting back to me with more detailed directions.  I would suggest you really need to update your video, as written directions aren't really sufficient.  As to the upgrade, I took my rig to an HP qualified tech (MicroCenter) and they were able to replace the card for me.  I will say I was able to watch the procedure, and the additional GPU bracket screws are quite difficult to get at without a longer screwdriver.  Thanks again, you can close this  request.

Hi @Roymus99,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Power Off and Unplug Your Desktop:

  • Ensure your computer is completely powered off and unplugged from the power source.

Open the Side Panel:

  • Release the side panel by unscrewing or unlatching it, depending on the model specs.

Locate the GPU Retaining Bracket:

  • The GPU in the OMEN 45L may be secured by a long metal bracket instead of the plastic one shown in some videos. Identify this bracket.

Remove the Metal Bracket:

  • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the metal bracket. There may be multiple screws securing it in place. Carefully set the screws aside.

Disconnect Power and Data Cables:

  • Disconnect any power cables attached to the GPU. There may be one or multiple power connectors, especially for high power GPUs like the RTX 4090.

Release PCIe Slot Clips:

  • Check the PCIe slot for any clips or locks. Release these by pressing or squeezing them to free the GPU from the motherboard.

Gently Remove GPU:

  • Hold the GPU by a sturdy part and gently pull it straight out of the PCIe slot. Take care not to bend or damage any connectors.

Install the New GPU (RTX 5090):

  • Reverse these steps to install your new GPU. Secure it to the PCIe slot, reconnect power cables, and reattach the retaining bracket.

I hope this helps.
