You are adding a SSD when using the M.2 slot; just much faster than a SATA drive. Think 3,500 MB/s read versus 540 for the SATA. 

Here's a picture of the M.2 populated (graphics card needs removed to install)  also a picture of a traditional SATA drive. Note, I had not installed the hold down screw yet. You will need to source a metric 3X50 (got mine at Ace Hardward).

 

If you look right above the red and blue sata cables where they exit the motherboard you can see the "second" screw that needs removed to take off the graphic card "mount". It has a ground wire attached to it.
