Hello...I'm interested in upgrading my Omen 45L GPU (current RTX 4090) to an RTX 5090. My questions:
Is the current power supply (1200 W 80 Plus Gold certified ATX power supply) adequate for the 5090?
Is the current cooling system (water cooled, specs not listed) adequate for the 5090?
Besides the standard nVidia GPU drivers, are there any specific drivers or BIOS updates needed?
Is there a recommended installation PDF or YouTube video guide from HP that you can provide a link to?
Thanks so much for your help!

Greetings @Roymus99
Welcome to the HP Forum.
Pick a 5090 you like.
Get the new GPU measurements at the manufacturer's site.
Verify the card will fit in the 45L.
I don't see a fitment problem as the 45L case is spacious and you are now using a beefy 4090.
The 1200 watt Power supply should be good to go using a 5090.
Good case temps using a 4090 should continue when using a 5090.
You should install the latest Nvidia 5090 drivers after you install the 5090 in the MB and run Windows. I don't think you will need a BIOS update but you can check for a HP BIOS update if desired.
I don't think HP does component upgrade videos. HP only provides warranty service on OEM components. You would have to install the HP 4090 if your PC needed warranty service.
This HP video shows how to remove and replace 45L components.

Thanks for the quick response! I was thinking about this one:
MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 VENTUS 3X Overclocked Triple Fan 32GB GDDR7 PCIe 5.0 Graphics Card
full height, quad slot. dimensions as follows:

My pleasure.
Very cool 5090.
I don't see a 5090 fitment problem.
Have you checked the 45L case dimensions or checked the HP 4090 dimensions?
I don't think you will be able to use the HP included GPU anti-sag bracket with a 3.3 slot graphics card (5090 spec).
Did you watch the HP video link in my first response? Timestamp 7:29 in this video shows how to remove and replace a graphics card.
Removing the 4090:
You need to disconnect the Nvidia 16 pin power supply connection to the card, remove the HP anti-sag bracket, and remove the screws securing the GPU to the rear of the case.
Depress the PCIe x16 GPU retention latch. Then slowly jiggle the 4090 out of the PCIe x16 slot.
Installing the 5090:
You will have to check the power supply end of the Nvidia 16 pin power cable to see what HP is doing there. You need to do nothing if the Nvidia 16 pin cable connects directly to the power supply as it can supply 600 watts to the 5090.
But, if HP is using a four connector splitter you will need four eight pin PCIe power cables connected to the Nvidia 16 pin splitter at the power supply connection.
Then install the 5090 in the PCIe x16 slot (verify the GPU retention latch is in the unlocked position), use screws to secure the graphics card to the rear chassis, connect the Nvidia 16 pin power connector to the 5090. Same procedure used to remove the 4090, but in reverse order.
Make sure all connections involving the Nvidia 16 pin power adapter are secure and fully seated.
Failure to do this could cause electrical problems resulting in damage to the 5090, the Nvidia power connector, and the power supply or other components connected to the power supply.
Check this Site for more Nvidia 16 pin power connector information.
You might want to have a local PC Tech install the 5090 if you are unfamiliar with installing PC components.

Hi, thanks again for the response! I should say I'm not exactly a novice, I've already upgraded the RAM from 16 to 32GB and installed a 2TB SSD drive on my Omen. I did watch the video (at least the GPU portion) and it looks straightforward, but I am a little concerned by your comment:
"I don't see a 5090 fitment problem.
Have you checked the 45L case dimensions or checked the HP 4090 dimensions?
I don't think you will be able to use the HP included GPU anti-sag bracket with a 3.3 slot graphics card (5090 spec)."
I'm assuming the "anti sag bracket" is the large black plastic retaining bracket on the right in the video? If that's true, and you don't think I can use it for the 5090, does that make this whole project a non-starter? Or are you saying the anti-sag bracket is optional (i.e. if it doesn't fit, then leave it off)?
I haven't checked the dimensions of my current case or GPU, I wouldn't know what to look for... that's kind of why I'm posting here 🙂 I'm hoping to take advantage of someone's experience who already went through this process. Thanks again!

My pleasure.
I use a tape measure to do a rough measurement to verify the card fits in the case (LxHxW). As I have stated; the 45l is a spacious case. You should not have a fitment problem.
The anti-sag bracket is not necessary but helps. The 5090 is a very big and heavy GPU (4.13 lbs.).
You can buy an after market anti-sag bracket if you think you need one.
Frying components by improperly connecting the Nvidia 16 pin adapter is something to consider. Is the HP 4090 using the Nvidia 16 pin connector?
I have never worked on a HP 45L case. I have built a lot of PCs since 1997.

Thanks, that's helpful. To answer your question, the current 4090 card is still in the Omen case, I haven't actually bought the 5090 card yet...this is all just an idea so far. I have no idea what kind of pin connectors are used for the supplied 4090 card and unfortunately it doesn't say on the specs page. I'm assuming it's the nVidia connector as the card is from nVidia (wouldn't it have to be?), but maybe I'm wrong.
If I need an aftermarket bracket, do you know where I could get one? If I go forward with the 5090 purchase I'll be buying it from MicroCenter, do you happen to know if they sell them? Also, I was going to check reddit to see if I could find someone who's already gone through this process with the Omen 45L/4090...do you happen to know of a good reddit to check? Thanks again (and again!).

My pleasure.
You would have to measure the case dimensions or compare the HP 4090 dimensions to the MSI 5090 dimensions. Check this HP Site for some 45L specs.
You would have to remove the left access panel. Check the 4090 power connection.
You have the Nvidia 16 pin adapter if there is only one power cable connection to the 4090. HP has AIB partners make components to HP specifications. So your PC's 4090 could have multiple eight pin PCIe power connections to the 4090. I can't say because I have not worked on your specific HP PC.
I'm sure someone at Micro Center can assist with the GPU anti-sag bracket.
I don't use Reddit. You would have to search Reddit for the right board and post your question.
It might be difficult finding someone with the exact HP 45L you have who has upgraded from the HP 4090 you have to the exact MSI 5090 you are looking at.
An accepted general procedure exists to upgrade a graphics card. But any successful component upgrade requires due diligence and adequate preparation.
A high powered, very large Nvidia graphics card upgrade is not the same (more variables) as adding memory or installing a SSD.
Best wishes. I hope you can get better GPU upgrade tips at Reddit.

Thanks, I appreciate all your help! I believe there's a single power adapter that I noticed last time I had the case open, we'll see...I'll probably give this a try with the 5090 from Micro Center (there's a 30 day return period) and see how it goes, worst case if there are issues I can just replace the 4090 and return the new card. hopefully I won't screw the pooch 🙂

My pleasure.
Make sure the connections at the power supply and the graphics card are secure and fully seated.
Get back to the Forum if you have a specific problem while installing the new GPU.
