Laptop starting problem

Hi @vishvaschauhan3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP laptop is not starting and displays the message "Selected boot device failed." This error typically means the system is unable to locate a valid boot device or operating system. It can be caused by a storage drive issue, boot configuration problem, or a recent hardware or software change. To determine the exact cause, we'll first need to gather a few details and check the health of the storage drive.

Information Needed

Could you please let us know:

  • What is the exact error message displayed on the screen? For example, does it include an error code such as Boot Device Not Found (3F0) or a different code?
  • What is the model or product number of your HP laptop?
  • Did this issue start after a Windows update, BIOS update, SSD replacement, or any other hardware or software changes?
  • Are you able to access the Startup Menu by pressing Esc repeatedly as soon as you power on the laptop?

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics test helps verify whether the storage drive is functioning correctly before proceeding with any additional troubleshooting.

If you can access the Startup Menu, please run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Run the Storage Test.
  5. Once the test completes, let us know the results, including any Failure ID or error message that is displayed.

Additional Information

If possible, please also share:

  • A clear photo of the error message on the screen.
  • The results of the HP Hardware Diagnostics.

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to the storage drive, the boot configuration, or another component.

Once we have the laptop model, the exact error message or code, and the HP Hardware Diagnostics results, we'll be able to guide you with the most appropriate next steps to get your HP laptop back up and running.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
