OMEN by HP 40L Gaming Desktop PC GT21-1000a (6M9M4AV)

I was in contact with HP support yesterday and all everything was updated and working last night. The omen logo "diamond" was yellow this morning.  It's supposed to be light blue. What gives? The junk computer does not even sleep properly.  What causes this computer to wake up? Sometimes the GeForce RTX light is on, or the memory led is on.  I am running Windows 11 23H2.  This computer has an AMD CPU and 32 GB memory.

Hi @lindab72

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. It sounds like you're experiencing some unusual behavior with your OMEN by HP 40L Gaming Desktop, including changes in the LED colors and issues with sleep functionality. Here are a few potential causes and troubleshooting steps to address your concerns:

1. OMEN LED Color Change (Diamond Logo)

  • System Status: The color of the OMEN logo might indicate system status, such as an issue with the GPU, power, or system temperature. Check the OMEN Command Center (or any related software that manages lighting) for any settings that could influence this color change.
  • Firmware/Software: It's possible that a recent update, whether through Windows or OMEN-specific software, may have impacted the LED behavior. Check if there's a specific setting in the OMEN Command Center or BIOS that controls the LED color. Make sure all relevant drivers and software are up-to-date.
  • Hardware Issue: While less likely, if there's a hardware malfunction with the LED or motherboard, it could cause unexpected color changes. If the issue persists, contacting HP support again might be necessary to ensure it's not a defect.

2. Computer Not Sleeping Properly

  • Windows Power Settings: Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Additional Power Settings > Change Plan Settings and make sure your sleep settings are configured as intended. You can try adjusting these settings to force the system to enter sleep mode after a certain period of inactivity.
  • Device Drivers and Updates: Ensure all your device drivers (especially for the graphics card, motherboard, and chipset) are up-to-date. It's possible that an outdated driver could be preventing the system from properly entering sleep.
  • Task Scheduler: Sometimes background tasks, like Windows updates, scheduled maintenance, or apps running in the background, can wake the computer. You can check the Task Scheduler or look for any apps that may be set to wake the system.
  • Check for Wake Timers: Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters > (your WiFi/Ethernet adapter) > Properties > Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer" if it's enabled. You can also do this for other devices like USB hubs or Bluetooth adapters.

3. GeForce RTX Light and Memory LED

  • GPU and Memory Activity: The lights turning on might indicate that these components are active or in a "power-saving" mode. This could happen if the system is waking up from sleep, is in a high-performance state, or if a background process is using the GPU (e.g., a game or software).
  • Check BIOS/UEFI Settings: Some systems have BIOS or UEFI settings related to "Sleep Mode" or "Wake on LAN." Try adjusting these settings to prevent the computer from waking up when unnecessary.
  • System Resource Usage: Open Task Manager and check the "Performance" tab to see if any background processes are using excessive system resources (like CPU, memory, or GPU). This might help identify if something is causing the system to wake up unexpectedly.

4. General Troubleshooting Steps

  • BIOS Update: Make sure the BIOS is up to date, as sometimes updates fix issues related to power management or hardware behavior.
  • HP Diagnostics: Run the HP hardware diagnostics to ensure there aren't any underlying hardware issues affecting power management or sleep mode.
  • System Restore: If the issue started recently, you might consider performing a system restore to a point before the issue began, especially if you noticed any updates or changes that could have impacted the behavior.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I have been in contact with tech support 2 times in the last week.  All of my updates, bios etc. were up to date.  It was suggested that OMEN Gaming Hub should be uninstalled and downloaded and installed.   This caused no change in behavior.  I have given up on the sleep mode except for short times away from the desktop.  From now on I will just shut down the computer.  I have read and been told that there are sleep issues caused by Microsoft "Modern Standby"

As I understand it, when this computer is rebooted on after a shutdown all of the LEDs show as the default white or light blue color.  This was the case until the Omen Logo Light showed yellow.  I learned that I have to launch OMEN gaming hub to restore my last light settings. Is this correct?

I think the Omen logo light (module) is failing as it no longer lets you select white or blue.  It was suggested that I pack up the computer and send it in for repair.  When the computer was shipped to me the shipping weight was 80 pounds.  Even without the box, the computer is too big to haul in my car.  I asked if I could just get a new RGB Logo Module (basically a light bulb) and I was told that it was not allowed.  There are YouTube videos showing how this can be done.  This is sad.

Thank you for replying to this problem Raj
