Dear HP Support Team,

A year ago, my laptop’s BIOS updated automatically, and since then, my Ryzen 5 3550H processor has been running at a frequency of 3.7 GHz instead of its base frequency of 2.1 GHz. This has caused significant overheating issues and performance problems with my laptop.

I have attempted to access and modify the additional BIOS settings to address this issue, but unfortunately, I haven’t been successful. Could you please advise if it is possible to resolve this issue and how I might go about doing so?

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards

Hi @Andrikk,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your laptop's BIOS update may have changed the settings that control CPU performance, possibly resulting in higher-than-expected clock speeds and overheating. To address this, you can try the following steps to access and adjust BIOS settings for your Ryzen 5 3550H processor:

1. Enter BIOS Setup:

  • Turn off your laptop.
  • Press the Esc key repeatedly while the laptop is turning on, and then select F10 to enter the BIOS.
  • If Esc doesn't work, you may need to try the F2 or Del key, depending on your model.

2. Adjust CPU Settings:

  • Once in the BIOS, navigate to the Advanced tab or Advanced Settings (if available).
  • Look for options related to CPU performance, such as CPU Configuration, Power Options, or Processor Settings.
  • Check for options like:
    • AMD Turbo Core (which boosts the CPU beyond the base frequency).
    • CPU Voltage/Frequency or CPU Power Management options that may be set to a higher value.
  • If Turbo Boost or Overclocking settings are enabled, disable them or lower the clock multiplier to reduce the CPU speed.

3. Disable AMD Ryzen CPU Features:

  • If the BIOS provides a setting for AMD Ryzen Performance Boost or Precision Boost, you may want to disable these to lock the CPU to its base frequency.

4. Check for Thermal Settings:

  • In the BIOS, you might also find options related to thermal management, such as Fan Speed Control. Adjusting these to allow better cooling could help with the overheating problem.

5. Restore Default BIOS Settings:

  • If you can't locate the specific settings, try restoring the BIOS to its default settings. There should be an option like Load Defaults or Reset to Default Settings. This can sometimes resolve performance and overheating issues caused by improper configurations.

6. BIOS Update/Restore:

  • If the issue began after a BIOS update, consider downgrading to a previous BIOS version (if available). Check the HP Support website for your laptop model to see if older BIOS versions are listed under the drivers section.
  • Alternatively, you could check if there is a newer BIOS update that addresses the problem, as manufacturers often release fixes for these kinds of issues.

7. Software Adjustment (Optional):

  • If you’re still encountering overheating issues, consider using software like AMD Ryzen Master to manually adjust CPU settings from within Windows. This tool can allow you to limit the processor's clock speed or disable overclocking features.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
