Omen Desktop 870-224

I was wondering if it is possible to replace the default processor the Omen 870-224 from i5-7400 processor to an i7-6700 processor.

You surely meant i5-6400 to i7-6700.

Yes, that's entirely possible - just make sure you get normal, not -K version as the latter requires different heatsink assembly that you are unlikely will be able to get.

Greetings,

Welcome to the forum.

I am not a HP employee.

HP has validated a i7-7700 on this MB. The MB has a H170 chipset so it should support a i7-6700.

It is hard to say if Intel gen 6 CPUs will work on this MB. I7-7000 series processors have been validated by HP.

Ouch! My (minor) mistake - first of all I should have checked that 870-224 is based on series 7 CPU.

Alas! The same principle as per information in my earlier links applies here in case you want to move from i5 to i7.

But as far as I'm concerned have to stay within the same generation of CPUs, i.e. series 7 - as per the information in the above links.

Motherboard supports the following processors:

Processor TDP Integrated Graphics
Intel Core i7-7700 (Kabylake) 3.6 GHz Quad Core 65 W Intel HD Graphics 630
Intel Core i5-7400 (Kabylake) 3.0 GHz Quad Core 65 W Intel HD Graphics 630
Intel Core i3-7100 (Kabylake) 3.9 GHz Dual Core 51 W Intel HD Graphics 630

It's unlikely that series 6 CPU will work correctly and I don't think it's worth trying.
