Greetings,
Have an unusual situation never encountered over 31 years of computing.
I back up data and create Windows images of two PCs to many 2.5 inch SATA SSDs using SABRENT 2.5 inch SATA to USB 3 adapters. Both PCs can read all bits written to the SATA/USB SSDs.
One PC is running W10, the other PC is running W11.
Now, just got a SSK M.2 to USB 3 adapter. Installed a, known good, NVME SSD in the adapter. Backed up some data and did a couple of system images using W10.
The W10 PC sees all of the bits written to the drive. And I have restored a W10 image to the W10 PC using this M.2 to USB adapter.
Connected the SSK M.2 adapter to the W11 PC to do some W11 backups.
The online M.2/adapter drive appears as unallocated space in Disk Management. I've never seen anything like this before???
I would lose all previous data written to this drive by formatting the drive.
Reconnected the M.2 adapter to the W10 PC, all is well.
I know the M.2 drive is good, both PCs run great. And, the 2.5 inch SATA/USB drive adapters work on both PCs.
This behavior is not logical. I'm thinking there is something wonky with the M.2 adapter. This does not compute!
Going to try formatting this drive using W11 and write some data to the drive. Then check if W10 can see the data.
Then I'm going to try a different M.2 drive and then try a different M.2 to USB adapter.
Very strange!
Am I missing something?
Regards

Hi @Bill_To,
No, you haven't missed anything.
If this is the product you're using, return it and get your money back.
In short: bad JMS583 controller and even worse heat transfer. Check out the one-star customer complaints, such as this one:

Yep, that's the M.2 enclosure.
I saw a 75% positive rating and the drive was on sale. I did not see the negative reviews.
Seeing the drive shown as unallocated space in W11 but it works fine using W10 is still freaking me out.
I'm going to get a different enclosure. SABRENT has one Here. I've had very good results with SABRENT's SATA SSD to USB adapters.
Your thoughts on the SABRENT adapter?

Now I am really confounded.
Have a Linux Mint PC.
Connected the SSK M.2 enclosure to the Linux PC.
Linux Mint read the drive. I can access the files on the SSK.
This suggest W11 is messed up. But W11 is fine when connecting many 2.5 inch SATA SSDs using an external USB adapter.
This is not making sense to me.

I personally have had good experiences with SABRENT products, but more often than not when specifically it comes to M.2 NVMe SSD to USB adapters, it's sort of hit and miss.

Greetings,
Well, decided to format the SSK M.2 drive in W11. Lost data is backed up on other external drives, no harm no foul!
Did a W11 image backup. Linux Mint can read the image backup made using W11.
Will see if W10 can read the drive.

Bought the SABRENT Here.
I agree with your assessment. The SSK enclosure is not good.
SABRENT drive installation is toolless.
The drive is running much cooler.
