Hello,

I've had a problem for 2 months now (and I'd like to fix it at last because it's quite annoying), I have certain keys on my keyboard (integrated into the pc) that don't work, or at least in a very strange way, these keys are: “_”,“ i”, ‘k’, “;” and “$” (I had to do atl + number to be able to type them here). In fact, when I type on these keys, nothing happens, and the only way to make them work is to type on them several dozen times, so that they work 1 time out of 3 (for example, as it can be 1 time out of 6), and that only for a few minutes, before they stop working. So I'm currently using the alt key combined with a value (for example alt + 105 to make the “i” key, but it's getting rather annoying).

I don't know if you can help me, or if I really need to go and see a repairman if it's a physical problem.

I've also tried different things, first of all the keys work with an external keyboard, I've tried uninstalling the peripheral, updating Windows, but nothing works.

Thanks in advance for any help

@AtosLoveU, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with intermittent keyboard issues, especially when specific keys like “_”, “i”, “k”, “;”, and “$” stop responding or work inconsistently.

Since you've already tried some good initial steps (external keyboard works, driver reinstall, Windows updates), let's go through a more structured troubleshooting approach:

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics for Keyboard

This will help determine if the issue is hardware-related.

  • Press Esc repeatedly at startup, then press F2 to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Select Component Tests > Keyboard Test.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to test each key.

Check for Sticky or Filter Keys

Sometimes accessibility settings interfere with normal typing.

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
  • Turn off Sticky Keys, Filter Keys, and Toggle Keys.

Update BIOS and Drivers

Outdated firmware can cause keyboard malfunctions.

Perform a Clean Boot

This helps rule out software conflicts.

  • Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  • Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.
  • Restart your PC and test the keyboard.

External Keyboard Works?

Since you mentioned an external keyboard works fine, this further suggests a hardware issue with the built-in keyboard.

If the built-in keyboard fails the diagnostics or continues to malfunction after these steps, it’s likely a hardware fault.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello, thank you for your help, but these solutions still don't work, so I think it's a hardware problem, so I'll go and see a computer repairman.

Thanks again and have a nice day!

@AtosLoveU, You're very welcome! 😊

It does sound like a hardware issue at this point, especially since the external keyboard works fine and diagnostics didn’t help. Visiting a repair technician is a good next step, they’ll be able to inspect the keyboard physically and possibly replace it if needed.
