We have three 17-w033dx HP Omen gaming laptops and all came with 12 Gig Ram DDR4 2133 memory 4 + 8 = 12gig.
We purchased three Laptop DDR4 8 gig PNY 2400 compatible with 2133 memory.
Installed (1) 8 gig with my HP 8 gig chip and it crashes after 30 to 120 minutes.
Sometimes the browser crashes sometimes windows crashes.
Tested a single PNY 8 Gig chip and it boots and runs fine.
Tested two PNY 8 gig chips and it crashes 10 to 120 minutes later.
Keep up with me here, we have three (3) of these 17-w033dx Omen gaming Notebooks.
They all came with 12 gig ram (4gig + 8 gig) and some of the memory has HP label and some do not.
So only some of the 17-w033dx notebooks came with labeled HP memory.
One of them came with 12 gig ram, but the one 8 gig chip is not labeled as HP.
We will call it the X brand 8 Gig chip so you can keep up with the testing
Took the one X 8 gig chip out of the other 17-w033dx notebook and installed it with the other HP 8 gig
This 17-w033dx notebook has run for 16 hours with no crash using the X chip and an HP chip 8X8 = 16 gig total.
So we know the laptops can run fine with 16 gig ram in an 8 gig + 8 gig chip configuration.
Put in one HP 4 gig chip with a PNY 8 gig Chip and it crashes wihtin 2 hours (120 minutes)
Put in two PNY 8 gig chips and it crashes within 2 hours, sometimes in a few minutes.
Put in one (1) PNY 8 gig chip and it runs fine for hours (3 to 4 hours.)
Slot 1 PNY chip and Slot 2 empty works fine
Slot 1 empty with PNY chip in Slot 2 works fine
Add any other chip pair with a PNY Chip in any slot and it starts crashing.
Test is running three different browsers playing full movies and running Unity 3D game development engine at the same time. Yes, this means doing game development with three different browsers playing movies. This is a suitable load test.
Some test that crash will crash on boot up or on log in or after one movie is running and we try to start Unity 3D.
For years all three 17-w033dx notebooks never crash, even if I am running three (3) different browsers and Unity 3D.
So with 12 gig ram with the memory that came in the 17-w033dx Laptops there is no (NO) crashing. I have had 20 internet tabs open in three different browsers while doing photo editing in Xara Photo Graphic Designer and also have Unity 3D open while doing game development all at the same time for 6 to 8 hours and ZERO CRASHES. This while running the 12 gig ram that came in the laptops from HP.
We Do Not Overclock The CPU or Overclock The GPU during these tests.
I can overclock the GPU with the regular HP 12 gig ram and it NEVER CRASHES.
These HP OMEN Laptops (17-w033dx) are extremely reliable... with the memory they came with.
I have overclocked the GPU from 965 to 1024 and 1055 with zero issues, but we are not overclocking them for these tests.
When first testing a memory upgrade it should be tested as it comes from the factory (not overclocked)
Again:
NO CRASHING when we mix the 8 gig chips that came in the Laptops.
NO CRASHING when we mix the 4 gig chips that came with the Laptops.
NO CRASHING when we use just one (1) PNY 8 gig 2400 memory stick.
The crashing starts when we try to use more than one chip with the PNY memory chip.
SO! We went and purchased 3 more PNY 8 gig chips from two other retailers (Just Incase Defective Chips)
This is now testing with many PNY chips, hopefully from different batches of chips.
SAME RESULTS, single chip fine, two chip configuration = crash
Again SAME RESULTS
It says on the packets they are 2400 and are compatible with 2133 chips.
Why will a single chip work but not two together?
Does anyone out there have the 17-w033dx laptops and upgraded to 16 gig ram with no issues.
If so, What Exact memory Did You Use?
We might order a 16 gig chip and try that but we prefer dual chips instead of single.

Hi:
If no one that has your notebook upgraded the memory, and can give you the info you requested, I recommend you use Crucial memory chips which are guaranteed to be compatible for your notebook...
