OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b0000 (2W6B0AV)

I have an omen 16 laptop bought in 2023, 5 days ago while playing casually my laptop crashed and displayed the 3F0 error, however after is restarted it after 5 secs the error disappeared, now the issue is when ever i try to play game it crashes and shows the 3F0 error but after few seconds of cool down it restarts as usual. I tried the ssd check everything passed. I want to know this error rises of faulty SSD or overheating of SSD? as i have never changed my thermal pad.

Hi @prayas1999,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for providing the details. The 3F0 error indicates that the system is intermittently losing access to the boot device, so I would not conclude that the SSD itself is faulty or that the issue is caused by SSD temperature based only on the fact that it occurs while gaming. HP recommends testing the storage hardware first when a 3F0 error occurs.

Since you have already run the SSD check and it passed, please run the Extensive SSD/Storage test through HP Hardware Diagnostics UEFI:

  1. Shut down the notebook completely.
  2. Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2.
  4. Select Component Tests/System Tests > Storage and select the SSD.
  5. Run the Extensive Test rather than only the Quick Test.

HP's Extensive Test performs additional checks of the storage device. If it fails, please provide the 24-digit Failure ID shown by the diagnostic. If it passes, that makes an outright SSD hardware failure less likely, and we can continue troubleshooting from the software/OS side rather than replacing the SSD immediately.

I would also recommend backing up your important files while the system is still accessible, since the intermittent 3F0 behavior means the boot drive is occasionally becoming unavailable.

For now, I would not replace the thermal pad or SSD based solely on this symptom. Please run the Extensive Test and let us know whether it passes or fails, along with any Failure ID if one is generated.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello, ran the extensive test, it passed. so the SSD failure is unlikely?

Hi @vikramthegreat ran the extensensives it passed, so the ssd failure is unlikely?

Hi @prayas1999,

Thank you for running the Extensive SSD Test and sharing the result. A passing result means HP Diagnostics did not detect an SSD failure during that test. However, because the 3F0 Boot Device Not Found error returns specifically when gaming, an intermittent storage connection, firmware, Windows, or another hardware-related issue still needs to be ruled out.

Please try the following:

  1. Restart the notebook and repeatedly press F10 to open BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to load the BIOS default settings.
  3. Press F10 to save the changes and exit.
  4. Restart the notebook and check whether the 3F0 error returns. HP recommends restoring BIOS defaults when troubleshooting a 3F0 error.

Next, open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI by pressing Esc repeatedly during startup, followed by F2. Run the available System Extensive Test, including processor and memory tests, to make sure the other hardware components pass. HP Diagnostics runs outside Windows and helps separate hardware failures from operating-system or software issues.

You may also use Windows System Restore to return Windows to a restore point created before the issue began, if one is available. This can help check whether a recent Windows, driver, or software change is involved. However, System Restore will not correct a physical SSD, connector, or system-board issue.

If all hardware tests pass but the 3F0 error continues during gaming, back up your important files immediately. HP’s documented next recovery option for a persistent 3F0 error is to reinstall Windows using HP Cloud Recovery or Microsoft installation media.

Please let us know whether all components pass the System Extensive Test and whether the 3F0 error returns after loading the BIOS defaults.

Hello Vikram,

Ran all extensive tests it passed, also restored the bios to default using steps you mentioned. However the 3F0 error still persists, contacted Hp they said to install OS through cloud but the issue is the same. However When i booted my system after fresh OS installation there were updates pending and automatically downloaded, shall i uninstall those updates or is there any other steps or the SSD is the culprit here?

Hi @prayas1999,

Thank you for completing the System Extensive Test, restoring the BIOS defaults, and reinstalling Windows through HP Cloud Recovery.

Please do not uninstall the Windows updates. Because the 3F0 error continued after a fresh operating system installation, removing routine Windows updates is unlikely to resolve it and could remove important security and driver updates.

HP’s documented troubleshooting for a 3F0 Boot Device Not Found error includes restoring BIOS defaults, updating the BIOS, running the SSD tests in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI, and reinstalling Windows. You have already completed most of these steps.

A passing Extensive Test means the SSD did not fail the SMART Check, Short DST, Optimized DST, or Long DST during testing. However, it does not rule out an intermittent issue that occurs only under load, such as the SSD temporarily losing detection or a problem with its connection or related system-board circuitry.

Please back up your important files while Windows is accessible. Then check whether the SSD is consistently detected in BIOS:

  1. Restart the notebook and repeatedly press F10 to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Check whether the SSD appears under the storage, system information, or boot information section.
  3. Repeat this check immediately after the next 3F0 error occurs.

If the SSD is missing from BIOS after the error but returns after the notebook cools down or restarts, the notebook requires hardware inspection. Since the extensive diagnostics pass and HP Cloud Recovery did not resolve the issue, further Windows reinstallation or update removal is not recommended. The SSD, its connection, and the system board should be checked by an HP-authorized technician.
