When I check the UEFI is see that the  BIOS setting  for Adaptive Battery Optimizer is "Adaptive Battery Optimizer Enabled/Not Activated." Does this mean it is working but is just not activated at this time or is there another setting to make it active? I need to keep this laptop plugged in all the time and I don't want to degrade the battery.

Hi @Christxr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

To be able to answer you effectively, we need some information.

May I have the exact name and product number of the unit? Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

Hi,

The unit is a HP Laptop 15-fd0107dx.

Hi @Christxr ,

Thanks for sharing the details.

I understand how important it is to ensure your laptop's battery remains in good condition, especially when it’s plugged in most of the time. I’m here to help clarify and guide you through this.

  • Have you noticed any irregular behavior with the battery, such as overheating or a decrease in its capacity?
  • Have you explored any other settings or features in the BIOS or HP software that might relate to battery health management?
  • Are you running the latest BIOS version for your laptop? If not, updating it might affect battery-related settings.

Let's try these steps.

1. Confirm Adaptive Battery Optimizer Status

  • The “Enabled/Not Activated” status means the feature is active in the BIOS but hasn’t been triggered because your laptop hasn’t met the conditions for activation.
  • It’s designed to optimize charging based on your usage pattern (e.g., keeping the battery at lower charge levels when always plugged in).
  • Leave it enabled and let the system adapt over time.

2. Update BIOS and HP Software

  • Visit the HP support website and ensure your BIOS and HP Battery Management tools are up-to-date.
  • Updating the BIOS can resolve potential bugs and enhance battery optimization features.

3. Enable HP Battery Care in HP Support Assistant (if available)

  • Open HP Support Assistant and look for battery management settings.
  • If HP Battery Care is available, enable it. This feature works in tandem with the Adaptive Battery Optimizer to maintain battery health during long periods of being plugged in.

4. Set the BIOS to Default Settings

  • If you suspect a configuration error, reset the BIOS to its default:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F10 during startup.
    2. Choose Restore Defaults or Reset BIOS Settings in the BIOS menu.
    3. Save and exit.

5. Limit Maximum Charge via HP Software or BIOS

  • Some HP laptops allow you to limit the battery charge level to ~80% when plugged in.
  • Check the BIOS for options like Battery Charge Management or similar, and set it to a more conservative charging mode.
  • If this isn’t available, use third-party tools like Battery Limiter to manage charge thresholds (though native options are preferable).

Tips

  • Avoid keeping the laptop plugged in if not necessary, as even with optimization features, battery degradation can occur over time.
  • Use cooling pads or ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating, which accelerates battery wear.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

I updated the BIOS. The feature still shows that it is enabled. I am not seeing any change yet. The battery is still charging to 100%. There is no setting that I can see in the HP Support Assistant, just a battery tester.

Hi @Christxr

Thank you for sharing the details. If your battery is still charging to 100% despite trying to limit it and enabling relevant features, it seems like the feature is not fully recognized or applied yet. Let’s troubleshoot further:

Verify Battery Health Management Settings

Some HP laptops have "Battery Health Manager" or "Adaptive Battery" settings, but these are often located in the BIOS rather than HP Support Assistant.

  • Access the BIOS:
    1. Restart your laptop and press F10 repeatedly during startup to enter the BIOS.
    2. Go to the Power Management or Advanced Settings section.
    3. Look for settings like Battery Health Manager or Battery Charge Limit:
      • If the setting is available, you should have options such as:
        • Maximize My Battery Health (recommended) – Limits the charge to around 80%.
        • Let HP Manage My Battery Health – HP automatically optimizes charging.
    4. Save changes and exit the BIOS.

If you do not see these options in the BIOS, proceed to the next step.

Battery Calibration

If the system is not recognizing charge limits, recalibrating the battery might help reset its behavior:

  • Fully charge the battery to 100%.
  • Unplug the charger and use the laptop until the battery drops to 5% or shuts down.
  • Let the laptop remain OFF for about 1 hour to fully discharge.
  • Plug in the charger and charge it back to 100% without interruption.
  • Restart the laptop and check the battery behavior.

Battery Settings in Windows

If HP’s tools don’t provide charge-limiting options, you can check Windows settings for battery optimization:

  • Open Settings > System > Power & Battery.
  • Under Battery, check for any settings like Battery Saver or Battery Health.
    • Note: By default, Windows does not provide charge-limiting options natively.

If none of the above work, it’s possible that your laptop does not support charge limiting natively. In such cases:

HP’s Battery Health Manager is generally available on business models or newer laptops, but not all consumer models support this feature.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
