Interesting findings. It looks like the same shutdown symptom may involve different ACPI paths on different OMEN models.

On my OMEN MAX 16-ap0006sl, board 8E35, BIOS F.13, I fixed it without modifying GPTS or calling PG00._OFF() directly. My patch extends _PTS(5), sets PEGP.OMPR to 3 and calls PEGP._PS3().

I packaged it here:

https://github.com/paolo-de-marinis/omen-acpi/releases/tag/v2.2.0

It currently targets CachyOS with mkinitcpio and Limine, builds from the machine’s own stock DSDT and keeps the stock boot entry available. S5-only is the recommended first test; Combined adds bounded WQBZ loops for the separate AE_AML_BUFFER_LIMIT issue.

Only my exact hardware has been validated. Other machines can opt in, but compatibility is not assumed and incompatible ACPI layouts are rejected.

@Pallipurath May we please have an update. DId you get this escalated to the engineering teams? It seems others have found the root cause.

@Pallipurath

Checking in again, any update?

I’m sorry everyone but I’m not championing this issue anymore. HP has no interest in fixing this, they cannot even reply to the thread. I called their support and they are clueless and have no ability to understand the issue and keep blaming windows as the problem when windows has no involvement here. I gave them this whole thread and they legit said “have you tried doing windows updates”. I immediately lost my **bleep** and ended the call.

You guys can keep trying but I’m done and have returned this laptop. HP support is abysmal. I work in support for a different company and I thought that was bad, but this takes the cake.

Good riddance. I’ll never buy another HP product in my life.

Please keep the thread on topic. We all get notifications for this and we need to be clear that this is NOT something we care about for this issue.

I care and I appreciate their message. It is important to understand that people give up and support is useless and the issue will likely never be resolved by them. I consider the message actually to be on topic. The advice matches mine - don't buy this laptop, don't buy HP. Return it until you still can. This is what new people should see when they google this issue and take immediate action. I would return it too but I bought it in a different country on a business trip

Hi @boostedn

Thank you for responding.

The HP OMEN 16-ap0038ns is supported and validated by HP for Windows operating systems. The troubleshooting performed across multiple Linux distributions, kernels, GRUB/ACPI parameters, and BIOS settings indicates that the issue occurs within the Linux power-management environment; however, HP Support cannot provide troubleshooting or guarantee functionality for an operating system that is not officially supported/tested on the system.

The latest BIOS (F.11 Rev.A) is already installed, and the relevant BIOS power settings have been checked. Since the system is running Fedora/Ubuntu/CachyOS rather than the supported Windows environment, further Linux-specific investigation, kernel modifications, ACPI workarounds, or GRUB parameter changes would fall outside the scope of HP Support.

For the supported operating system and drivers, please refer to the official HP support page for the device:

HP OMEN 16-ap0038ns Support

HP Support is limited to Windows on this device. If another operating system is installed, HP cannot provide the same level of troubleshooting or assistance because the hardware and firmware configuration is tested and validated against the supported Windows environment.

Therefore, the best supported approach would be to reproduce the shutdown behavior under the supported Windows operating system. If the system powers off normally in Windows, this would further indicate that the remaining issue is specific to Linux/its kernel, ACPI implementation, or power-management stack rather than a Windows-supported HP hardware issue.

Have a good day.

No, naw, no way.

I'm sorry everyone is getting this message.

@Pallipurath I cant accept the official answer from HP there was just "We only support windows"

That is infuriating. I'll ensure to never get another HP again.

However back to the point, this is an ACPI issue, how ACPI works is an open industry standard and this bug proves that its not been implemented as the standard expects - if it was, it would work. Thats not an OS level issue e.g a "linux" issue. This is HP not implementing a standard correctly causing a firmware bug, it should be resolved in a bios update.

Please escalate the issue to the engineering team. I bought the laptop with FreeDOS hoping its not tied at all to Windows 'cause im using Linux. Cant return it now and get refund ... and this is issue is in the BIOS as the others have said and described.

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

I understand the frustration when you encounters a hardware or software issue while running Linux on an OMEN gaming PC.

HP OMEN systems are primarily validated and supported with the operating systems listed for the specific product. When a customer installs a Linux distribution that is not officially supported for that model, our ability to troubleshoot OS-level issues can be limited.

This does not necessarily mean that the OMEN hardware cannot work with Linux. Linux compatibility can depend on the distribution, kernel version, GPU drivers, BIOS/firmware, and other system components. However, HP support may not have the same level of Linux-specific troubleshooting resources, drivers, or documentation that are available for supported Windows configurations.

We understand that this can be disappointing, particularly for developers, enthusiasts, and gamers who intentionally choose Linux.

Have a good day.
